Supercharger whistle or ...Something, After Download.

I just got my MINI serviced today here's what went on today:

Got up @ 6 <early for me I'm normally asleep for only ~3 hours at that point

Went down to Indy, let my mom drive, I tried to sleep but couldn't when hearing every gear being slipped!

Got there, told them what I wanted done ('05 rear fog retrofit, fix idle problem)

They gave me a ride to the fashion mall in a brand new, (right off the truck lastnight, not joking), 2006 M3 Demonstrator!

shopped for awhile w/my mom.

went back, they loaded four boxes in the boot, each with one of my new R90s in them.

Drove home. 2.5+ hours

Ah so you say no problems huh?? Well there really isn't any problems. Actually I like what my car is doing now:
In motion ( accelrating 2500+ rpms), I hear whistling sound almost as if I have an awesome super or turbocharger. I have never heard this before, or it was not as dramatic as what it is now.

I think it's kinda cool!
Anyone know what it is?

Mikey

BTW no hard idles since!!!

So you are saying there were no physical changes made, and you are hearing the S/C more above a certain RPM?

I would suspect a leak in your intake plumbing. Maybe if the had to do surgery to get ride of the idle?

no all the service log says is they reflashed the ecu. there was a technical bulletin out on it. It's not a big whistle but if you listen closely it is noticable.

No ECU change would do that. Most likely something physical was done that you are unaware of, as posted you probably have a leak. Take it back.

it's when I rev the car too, when I was backing into my driveway tonight it did it and I was going all of 5mph! I checked all the intake hosing and nothing is loose or seems to be wrong!

Trust me... it doesn't take much to have a vacuum leak. The reality is that you may have a vacuum leak so small that it causes only the whistle (be thankful). if you have one that is any worse you would notice a problem with the car idling poorly and excelerating not so well.

I would call the dealership and schedule a time for them to look at it. The worse hat will happen right now is you will loose a few mpg's. If your idle starts to get real rough then you know you have more of a leak.

It isn't how I descrived it. it seems to be whining in conjunction with the supercharger. Like I said you have to listen for it and it only is there in a certain rev range (~2500-3000 rpms). So where is this vacuum hose? I checked the one going into the airbox and you couldn't get that thing out with a crow bar!

I think it's the supercharger but...

Mikey

BTW i gotta go to bed having my BFGs installed tomorrow morning at Tire Rack in South Bend.
It's funny; I live less than 1.5 miles from the H2 plant, and less than 15 from tire rack!

Any chance you have your AC on? A lot of people have described, including myself a different sound that comes from the engine bay when the AC is blowing. Sounds a bit like a raspy whine. It goes away when the AC is off. I never noticed it until about after 30,000 miles. Any chance that might be it?

A vacuum leak can occure from a variety of places. There is not a specific hose that would cause this. You could be getting a leak from the junction of the throttle body tube to the base of the supercharger. This you would have to remove a part of the front end to figure out.

The fact that you are getting it in that range could suggest a vacuum leak when boost kicks in.

One way to find out is to get some carb cleaner (spray can with the long nozzle) and while the engine is running and bonnet up spray in different areas around the the TB and other hoses. If at any point your engine starts to increase in RPM then you have a leak somewhere that is pulling in the carb cleaner. You may not be able to pinpoint the exact point but then you will know if that is the issue at hand.

Whistle noise

Is it more of a whistle noise that comes when you blip the throttle? Very high pitted noise. I have a noise the dealer said is normal. It occurs when I just blip the throttle and they say its due to the TB opening and closing and something to do with the boost..I don't know
