After about 2000 miles I started noticing this constant popping coming from underneath my MINI. It sounds like metal popping when it expands/contacts from heat. And it's not just mine, I also noticed this in the loaner from the dealer when I had my car in for the CD3.1 software update. It's quite annoying, but not so loud that it can't be drowned out by the radio. It seems to be coming from the under the front seat area, in the center, possible the heat shield towards the front of the exhaust pipe. Anyone else have this problem? Know of a fix? I searched the forums to no avail.

Nevermind, I found the cause over on "the other site".
Quote from a mini2.com forum:
"...it turned out to be the exhaust heat shield being misaligned."
I'll be asking the dealer about this issue tomorrow.

Moderators, if you read this can you move this under the "Mechanical Isues" thread.

Well we're powerful ( MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ), but we're not that powerful. I can move, sticky, delete and lock a thread, but there is no "merge" option.

Since this is in beneath the bonnet, I'll leave the thread where it's at.

Wow, I have that clicking, tapping noise too but I just thought it was the car cooling off. Is this heat shield being misaligned serious? Will my @ss get burned? Will I find a nice girl this year? Seriously though please keep us updated on what the dealer has to say about this.

Made an appt and as typical the dealer has never heard of this issue, nor did they seem to care. I will be taking mine in next week to see if this slight annoyance (the popping noise, not the dealers incompetence) can be fixed. I will post any results or other dealer bashing comments here.

I don't know if this is the same thing or not, but after driving for a little bit (20-30 minutes) and come to a stop sign or light, I hear thse clicking noises on the roof. It happens every few seconds or so.

At first it sounded like something from a tree dropping on the car. Yesterday I was motoring with a friend and they got out and watched and listened. He looked under the car and the sound seemed to be coming from the back of the car. Any ideas?

I don't want that sound to go away. It gives the car character just like my green "Andy Cap" plad cap.

I hear the same noises from the rear of my mini, i hear them even after the car is off for a while. It sounds like something is falling on the roof or tapping against it. :???:

Yes, I did notice that as well. Does anyone know what this might be... did not have/notice it during the first 1K miles.
