R57 AUto Trans Caution Light : WHat do you think??
Hello to all:
Issue I have is on my 2012 R57 S. I have spoken about some issues, mainly electrical, but this is new.
Car is equipped with an auto trans and a caution light came up the other day. On startup putting in Drive, Gear Image appeared. I comes back when upshifting and downshifting of trans (not by paddles or "manual") usually around second gear or so. Trans operates smoothly with no other issues at any point previously or since. Image appears and goes out.
I am thinking about fluid change, as it just passed 100K and I assume it has never been done.
Am I on the right path? Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Dan in NJ
Fluid change isn't a bad idea. It should really be done way before 100K on these cars, I think. Mini says 'lifetime' fluid but I'm sure that's life of the warranty, and the Aisin transmission has enough issues that the smart money is on keeping the fluid clean.
That said I'd probably pull the codes and see what error you're getting. A Mini-specific reader should be able to access the transmission codes.
Thanks for your replies.
About the codes. I have a Foxwell NT510. It shows no Trans codes. Just ran it before writing this.
I do have a short circuit Fault in the Footwell 2 Module and a convertible top code. Separate issues but no Trans code.
A separate OBD reader also shows no Trans code but does pick up the Footwell short-circuit fault.
So I plan on changing the fluid and will check again. I assume two fluid changes will "completely" change the fluid.
Good catch there: reading the manual can actually be useful I guess, lol. So sounds like it could be either the brake pedal switch or the lockout solenoid on the lever.
Pull codes for the other systems, I know I've seen shift lever position faults so the OBD2 will report those. That may give you some clue on the specific issue.
I'd still replace the fluid even if unrelated to your current issue!
Thanks for the replies.
I will check the pedal switch and steering column connections (shift paddles do not function), can't hurt.
The shift interlock in the floor shifter was "broken" due to a previous owner and his Magilla Gorilla mode of shifting. I was able to move shift lever but could not remove the key fob. PO decided to force remove FOB. I put a new key fob assembly in and reglued the interlock and it functions correctly now and the previous year or two.
I am probably going to purchase a new D/S tail ight assembly as OBD scans have always shown a fault / short circuit in the Footwell module. That might help.
