Potential fire or temporary solution? (power steering pump)
Potential fire or temporary solution? (power steering pump)
Good morning!
Situation:
Had my power steering pump stop running.
Tore it apart, cleaned it out, put it back together.
It came back to life. But now it's running all the time.
I'm gonna sit and think if I want to try refurbing the electronics or replacing the whole thing.
Question(s):
If I just disconnect the battery every time to shut it off, is it fine to run the car?
Or are there different speeds that it runs at and I'm running it high unnecessarily and creating a fire hazard?
Btw, some information I gathered on the tear down:

Btw, some information I gathered on the tear down:
- Bearings (x2)
NTN 6001LAX3 - Lip Seal
10x22x6mm
ZF 7625, 033 103, CFW (Carl Freudenberg Weinheim), A52, BDX2 - Square Profile O-ring
Couldn't source this
The only place I saw online selling a kit for our pumps used a normal profile oring
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...n-key-off.html and recall.
DIY^^
People have rebuilt them, their was a recall and they would look and make sure you have the updated pump. If you dont want to do the rebuild or worry that the older pump might fail and stay on I would get a newer one. Also make sure that you dont fall into that recall, if you do then a local MINI dealer might replace it with an updated unit. But you are in canada and i dont know if they recalled them all.

Canadian, no recall.
And yes, I've already taken apart the motor, cleaned it, taken apart the pump, replaced the lip seal and most o-rings, but not the square profile o-ring (I couldn't find any info on it).
Now the pump went from dead, to running all the time.
A slight improvement :p
I'm going to look and source the electronics to do that, but in the meantime...
Can I drive it and disconnect the battery every time I park?
While driving, does it run at multiple speeds?
Potential for it to run on high all the time and light on fire?

Yes, you can do that. Just one speed. All the time and it gets hot. Its not hot outside yet so if you drive it all day and its does not cool after you shut the car off (with the little fan) it could wear it out faster and fail.
I would just replace the whole unit down the road. I worry that it will continue to just run unless fixed 100%.

Ah! Right!
I forgot about the fan.
So yah, that could potentially be a problem if I don't fix it before it gets hot.
Thanks for that, ECS.
Yes, this pump rebuild is out of stubbornness.
Reading on this forum, it seems people suggest to get OEM or else have risk another flaky pump.
When I looked for a new OEM, it was 600cad, now it went up to 1200cad.
The same guy is selling a new Bosch (says it's the same pump) for 800cad.
