hello, i have a 2002 mcs with about 63,000 miles on it. Anyway normally whenever i turn the wheel there would be a whirring/electrical noise which by reading old posts i assume is the power steering pump and its normal for it to be making that sound. Anyway all has been well with my one month ownership so far until today when i cranked my car and drove down my drive way (private drive) and the steering felt odd, so i turn the wheel and what do you know, no power steering. I didnt panic so i just turned around and went back home, what i noticed was there was no electric/whirring noise anymore. The powersteering returns sometimes when left at idle along with it comes a build up of the aformentioned noise then when you turn the wheel as if it runs out of juice the whirring stops and again no power steering. My conclusion is that the power steering pump has died or is in the process of dieing. What is everyones take on what i am experienceing? luckily i have a 60 day 2,000mile warranty on my car that actually covers the power steering pump along with every other goody except the clutch. Im just wondering how long does a dealer take to fix this type of thing usually? I bought the car from a toyota dealership if that makes a difference. Also i did check the power steering fluid and its good to go. Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance.

 

My power steering pump went out on me as well this weekend. It's only cut off on me once, but now every time I turn the car off the pump still runs and I have to disconnect the battery. I have a few emails out right now for a prices on a new pump. Looks like I will have a busy weekend since mine is out of warranty.

From my readings, it's run anywhere from $800-1600 to replace the pump and fan.
