Dorman OE fix power steering pump?

Looks like I need a new power steering pump.
Has anyone tried the Dorman's power steering pump OE fix claim?...

https://www.rockauto.com/genImages/4...Case-Study.PDF

Thanks!

Don’t have any info on the Dorman but have you checked your VIN on the MINI website to see if your car is part of the power steering pump recall?

Before buying a new one, did you consider trying to fix it yourself? Depending on how it's damaged, you might save yourself the hefty cost of a new one.

I didn't try myself, but found this video to be informative. They seem to be prone to dirt accumulation, and even just cleaning it without going further could be enough to bring it back to life (the video shows much more, but dirt accumulation was the actual issue).

Yes, unfortunately I'm not on the recall list.

As a matter of fact, I have taken it apart!
I am considering a rebuild, but am exploring my options too.

The machined pump face on mine looks like it's been leaking for a while.
I haven't been able to remove the contamination.

Not sure how good of a seal I'll be able to get...?

The genuine Mini part went from $800CAD to $1400CAD.
How ridiculous is that?!

Looks like I'm gonna try rebuilding this.

I'm gonna try soaking
the faces in Coca-Cola to clean them up first.

Dorman has been back ordered for a while, so i would double check those places. Bosch we can get, some others are out of stock.

AAE ones are back in, they were the go to before all the others entered the market and rebuilding.

ZF and bosch were OEM.

Ah, I see.
I didn't see it in stock, just saw it as an option.
Good to know it may be hard to find.

*IF* the rebuild doesn't go well, did you know or hear of how these "OE fix" Dorman's performed?

Welcome,

They are fine, i have not heard or seen any problems with them, its just availability. AAE has some in stock and we can get them, they are one of the few we can get right now.

I just dont want you to have to wait.

Reviews of the Dorman so far are "meh" at best
Amazon Amazon

Cheapest price found, $288 at Jegs (on 'back order').
https://www.jegs.com/i/Dorman-Produc...9-950/10002/-1

Maybe they pulled it from the market due to quality issues / component availability etc

Yep, looks like a bunch had shipping damaged plugs, I have seen the Genuine MINI one do that. Pump is heavy and flips in the box, seems like a weak spot.

Just go with the AAE part and get it fixed.

Also i would do the lines at the same time and make sure you get al the old oil out. The reservoir has a built in filter.

A shop told me that my feed hose and my pump are leaking. I've looked around the web - youtube videos, here, etc. - and I see a lot of stuff about fixing the electrical probs, but nothing about leaks. Do PS pumps leak? Is that a common problem? Or are these guys just trying to turn a leaky hose replacement into a big $$ money maker?

PS pumps can leak, but most of the time its the lines leaking down on it. Clean the lines and at the connection point, if the pump leaks it will be at the neck or the plastic side of the pump.
