Is the MINI oil filter sold at non-MINI dealers? (IOW, is this a part common to bimmers as well?)

TIA,

Jeff in ATL

It's listed as a BMW part, so at the very least they can order it for you. I picked up mine at the BMW dealership, and they had it in stock, but they had a MINI dealer next door. One suggestion: become a member of the BMW Car Club of America before buying anything from them. You get a 20% discount on all parts as a member. Buy any aftermarket parts and you've pretty much paid for your membership.

Hopefully we'll get similar MINI discounts through MINICCA (or click here for MCO discussion of MINICCA) when we can join. January?

Hey thanks for the tip Jason. That is the correct part #. Just have to catch the local dealer when they're open and find out.

Went by Chris BMW in Atlanta, and the parts guy said that it's a MINI-specific item. BMW dealers won't carry.

Further, he said that if he tried to order it, that they wouldn't ship it to him. Looks like a trip to MINI to get filters.

Very interesting. I paid $12 too, at Herb Chambers in Boston. I wonder if the dealerships charging $8 would be willing to ship it? Obviously we're only talking about a dollar or two difference ultimately, but I have a big problem with the kind of across-the-board price gouging that some dealers engage in. It's not enough that I just gave them $20k, they have to screw me on the stupid oil filter, too?

I'm really not as cheap a bastard as I probably make myself sound; it's just the principle of the thing. Herb Chambers is slimy, and I don't want them getting a cent of my $ that they don't have to.

I also paid $7.40 at Global Imports in Atlanta. (Although I bought at Hank Aaron, GI is closer to me.)

If you want to buy from them, Globals' contact info is:
Parts hotline: 770-951-9389
Toll-free: 800-235-2987

The guy I dealt with was Colin Blackledge, and he was very helpful. He actually called me (catch your breath--someone with customer service!) when they came in & set a couple aside for me.

HTH,

Jeff

I've been curious about this too...are there any aftermarket filters available?

I have emailed Fram about when they will have a Mini application available. Hopefully I can post a follow up when I receive it.

crashgearbox: I'll give you an A for effort, but I encourage you to do a little reading about Fram oil filters --- I don't think you would feel comfortable putting any of their filters into your MINI after a little research. At least I know I won't ever buy Fram again.

One of the MINI mechanics suspected that the MINI filter is made by Mann, like many BMW filters.

I'd like to see Bosch put out an aftermarket filter for the MINI.

Because many auto enthusiasts do not feel comfortable with 10K changes, regardless of who pays  We do it between dealer changes.

Thanks. Is there any chance of invalidating the service agreement other than using maple syrup instead of 10W-30?

Splicer: First and foremost - A big, hearty welcome to MCO!

Second, thanks for that info!

Oddly enough, however, at $6.99, I might continue to just pick up an extra filter when I'm at the dealer. I don't know. Hmmm.... I wish we had more information on the filters to compare.

No. As long as you don't neglect to put oil back in or something like that.

If you choose to do normal maintenance yourself (for the heck of it, say you live far from a dealer & do the 10k oil change yourself) you MUST be able to document that you've done it. Receipts, dates and mileage.

In this case since it's not scheduled I simply am not going to tell them I've done anything. No harm, no foul.

Jeff
