R53 Stalling
R53 Stalling
The other night, my wife started our R53 and she said it was making a racket. I can get the car to start and it seems to run fine with the RPM's up. However, when the RPM's drop the car stalls. Also, if I put it into gear and try to move it, it stalls.
It shows a P0171 (system too lean) confirmed code and also a P0172 (system too rich) pending code. I could definitely smell changes in the exhaust. Is there a flowchart to diagnose the cause of the problem?
I have INPA along with a regular OBDII scanner. I'm trying to figure out where to download ISTA as well.

Thanks for the tip. I got ISTA installed. It pointed to a bad pre cat O2 sensor. As I was running the test, I noticed that the car ran mostly fine until warmed up. Once it got close to operating temp, the car would stall unless I kept the RPM up.
I just picked up an O2 sensor, so we'll see if that solves the issue.

I got the new O2 sensor in, but it is still acting the same. I'm about to hit 100K, so I don't feel too bad about replacing it since it's recommended.
I ran a new test. I am now getting an error on the t-map sensor:

No fault can currently be found in the tested component group.
The intermittent fault may possibly be caused by a poor connection.
Check correct connection of plug connectors and line
I took out the tmap and it looks clean. All the connections and wires look fine, but need to remove the air box and have a closer look when it's light out.

Try cleaning the plug and check the connector pins and all.

i just got one from fcpeuro
I called Cincinnati Mini, hoping to find a T-Map sensor in stock locally. I'm constantly disappointed with this dealer. Nothing in stock and 10-13 days delivery for $190 something. This dealer never has anything in stock and marks parts up 30% over list. A couple of online Mini parts dealers list the same part for about $112, but I was unsure of the delivery time. fcpEuro and ECS had long lead times also. It's amazing that these are hard to come by for a seemingly frequent problem.
Fortunately @WayMotorWorks keeps them on hand for a fair price. I added a Cravenspeed dipstick to replace my broken one to the order. I'm hoping the sensor comes in soon as it's my wife's daily driver.

It was the T-Map sensor!!!!
Unfortunately, the new replacement hadn't arrived yet. However, an R53 landed in my local U-pull-and-pay yesterday. Grabbed it, cleaned it, installed it and everything is good with the world again!
