Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S(R56), and Cabrio (R57).
Hi everyone! I'm new to the mini community and absolutely love my 2010 cooper s. I've had it for about month now and started noticing a grinding I assumed was worn brake pads. I checked the brake pads and they're still good. I then took it for a ride and put it neutral as I driving and still rolling. Nose went away then when I put it back into gear nose came back. Anyone have any idea where this noise is coming from. Oh the noise is coming from front right side of car. This is her 😊
I imagine people will be able to assist you better if you give a little more information. How many miles, is this a manual tranny, what work has been done to the car before you? Just sayin

Thanks for the response and my apologies for the vague post. Car is completely stock with manual transmission and 107,770 miles on it. I was thinking it may be the clutch since the noise goes away when I shift it to neutral and let it coast. Once I shift it back into any gear the noise comes back. Hope it's nothing too serious as I'm moving from New Jersey to Florida and plan on driving. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Any chance at all that you are resting your left foot on the clutch pedal while underway? Also, when stopped are you leaving it in gear and keeping the clutch disengaged? Both practices create unnecessary wear and are right out.

Hi Fly'n BrickI don't do either of the things you mentioned. This has baffled me for a week now. Could of sworn it was due to worn brakes because that's exactly what it sounds like. Maybe I'll just have to take it to a shop and get it looked at.

Very good. It's amazing how many people don't realize how much wear and tear on the clutch and TO bearing ultimately affecting the gear box those two practices have.
Your first post mentioned noise coming from passenger side of engine. The sound could also be coming from timing chain. When car is going 45 mph (as example) and place tyranny in neutral, it also takes the load off the engine. I have heard that 2nd gen Mini's make a little sound when cold started. At 100K a lot of cars need some major work to make it to the 200K mark. There are so many Mini savvy folks on this site, others may chime in.
