Just fixed ELV - Red Steering Wheel warning
Just fixed ELV - Red Steering Wheel warning
2007 R56 with approx 90K miles. Due to Covid and having 4 cars in house and not having anywhere to drive, some of my autos experienced low battery. My mini was one of them. I suspect this was the cause of the ELV warning on the dash. Recharged the battery to full. I could hear the lock engage. and disengage when I placed the key into the ignition so it wasn't my lock dying. The icon didn't disappear and I didn't want to go to the dealer to pay a bunch of cash for them to clear it.
I read on here about using INPA/ISTA/EDIABAS etc to clear the code. I puchased a cheap k+can cable off of ebay. I tried a bunch of places to download the software but to be honest, I could never get the software to work properly. My install skills I guess were pretty poor. I read on a BMW forum about a free android app called Deep OBD for BMW and VAG so I downloaded to my phone.
Since I didn't want to run into this issue again, I purchased a cheao ELV emulator from ebay as well, pulled my steering column apart, and unplugged the ELV while the car was running to ensure that it was not locked. I had read that BMW had disappeared the ELVs after 2008 so I wasn't concerned that this was an issue. I connected the ELV to the emulator. One of the ebay sellers claimed that the ELV icon would disappear after 7-10 drive cycles so I drove around for a week but it didn't seem to do anything. I then used Deep OBD with the cable I purchased (had to purchase a USB to USB-micro dongle) and after fooling around with it, managed to use the built in EDIABAS tool to get rid of the warning. So physically disabled ELV with an emulator giving the signal the CAS is looking for and no light. I'm a happy camper. I may eventually go back and drill out the lock bolts and remove it entirely.
Take a look at the Deep OBD app if you are looking to do some work without the headache of install on a laptop. I found it really convenient (No affiliation with the app. Just a satisfied user).
I used the following for reference:

Used the above discussion to look for the german terms to reset the ELV
Used this video to get to the actual plug.
