R56S New starting issue

Hi everyone,
Having a new issue with the 2009 Cooper s over the past week or so. On a cold start, the car will start fine, then immediately die. Start again and it’s good, like nothing happened. No CEL. Hot starts seem to be a non issue.

This morning was the first time it took 3 attempts to get going. Normal driving the engine is very strong and returning around 32mpg.

Any thoughts?

I'm not a mechanic so please take what I say with a grain of salt, but when was the last time you change the plugs? I would start there because it's the cheapest and easiest problem to fix and then go to coils. Swap the 1 and 3 cylinders plugs with the 2 and 4 and see if the problem moves. It is very odd that everything is normal and then it just dies.

The cold start issue sounds like the HPFP is starting to die. Get a code reader that can monitor fuel pressure - check fuel pressure while you start. Idle pressure should be in the neighborhood of 700 psi (IIRC). Tank pump puts out around 60 psi (FYI).

Intake valves need blasting, not the exhaust valves.
