Rattle when engine cold, no rattle when engine warm

The ATI vibration damper failed for some reason that I cannot figure out. There was scarring on the timing chain cover that matched the inside of the vibration damper.

@RedSky455, I wish I'd had my wits about me - I failed to take a picture. I'll describe it though.
There was a groove dug into the timing chain cover about 1 mm deep that matches the outer edge of the ATI damper, only on the top. Looking at the timing chain cover, straight on, the groove was from probably 10 - 2 o'clock, only. It was deepest at the 10 o'clock point, and disappeared at the 2 o'clock point.
Interestingly, there is no visible damage to the ATI damper, unless there's a surface flaw that I missed.
Let's hope this helps someone else decipher this tricky problem down the road. The parts are comparable in cost to a timing chain repair, but it's a 2 hour job to change a damper, vice 4-6 or more for a full timing chain service - at least for me, in my driveway...
