Posessed speedometer needle!

I got into the MINI this morning and heard a 'clicking/ticking' sound. I hadn't done anything yet---just sat in the car. I looked around for where the sound was coming from and noticed it was coming from the speedometer, which was moving a few degrees with each 'click'
From the zero mph position it was moving up a degree or so back and forth every second or so. I put the key in the ignition---still it moved. After turining the key it (to position before ignition) the clicking and moving stopped.

Anyone know what was going on??

(I just had my 10K service with an ECU upgrade a couple of weeks ago. I had also just cleaned the plastic cover of the speedo earlier in the morning----don't know if these are relevant I have a Sep 03 build '04 MCS.)

I just got in the car a moment ago and noticed that when I popped open the passenger door the sppedo did one 'click' and move when the door opened. Closed the door and tried again---nothing.

LEMON LAW THAT POS!!!

jk

That's weird though. Nothing in the manual about it? Did you call the dealer or askmini?

I would imagine it being some strange little diagnostic check it does that nobody knows about... but then again...

it must be the mini's way of telling you to work the speedo some more. It's getting restless. That, or you're delusional, and need serious psychological help.

Hey there! Haven't heard from you since we tracked our cars in the MINI Owner's Lounge a year ago in Sept/Oct!

Regarding your electrical issues: it might be useful to start at the battery and make sure all connections are clean and tight. Not that this this will fix your issue but, like chicken soup for a broken leg, it couldn't hurt!

A friend was having intermittent electrical issues and eventually traced it down to slightly loose connections on the battery terminals. Sometimes if the terminals are loose, arcing can occur and leave deposits that further interfere with the current. Check, clean and tighten those puppies and then see if the satanic speedometer returns.

FWIW,

Theo

Mine did that too when I opened the driver's door without the key in. Stopped on its own and never did it again. I attributed it to nerves as we were motoring around with some particularly large and intimidating SUV's on the road earlier in the day.

Hi Koopah!
How's your baby? Mine is doin' fine!

I just stepped out into the freezing garage and checked the speedo again. One click and wiggle upon first opening then none again.

I'll check the connections as suggested and give the service dept. a call.

Maybe the speedo IS just hinting for a good workout!

Happy Holidays to all

Ours too, and its periodic

Our '04 (June build) has also exhibited the possessed speedo click and it was not a one time occurance. I've noticed it at least 3 times, with no pattern thus far. Typically won't see it until coming out to the car after it has been parked overnight. But, yesterday I pulled it out of the garage, washed it, and when going to the interior for a wipe down there it was, clicking away.

Mini USA, what is up with this? Any further clues from anyone?

ofioliti,

Hi stranger:smile: My new 05 MCC has this strange anomaly. Occurs only when passenger door is open & has happened 3 or 4 times. It doesn't seem to affect anything so at this point I'm not worried. Just one of my MINIs little quirks Keep your eyes peeled for my new BRG Cabrio

Tach issues!

I have not had this problem, but what I have had is my tach goes out... I just had my V.39 upgrade and since then my tach goes out randomly. I give it a little tap and it comes back on. Its almost like the wire is loose or something. Anyone else experience this issue? I have yet to take it off to look at it. The dealer has not returned my call yet so I am in limbo right now! Any thoughts??

It happened to me tonight. It's quite freaky.

Let me know if you hear anything more about this.

Hi Lois,
I met your new MCC at the S MO Road Rallye---beautiful car!
(I signed up to go to the holiday party, but our baby-sitter backed out )

I did what Koopah suggested above and fiddled with the battery connections and the speedo hasn't been posessed since even thought the connections didn't appear to be loose at all. I haven't gotten a chance to talk to anyone at MINI service, but I'll report what they say when I do.

It happened to me and now my cars in the dealer.

Dec. 31 my go to my car to start and click click click with the speedo and at the fuse panel like a relay is clicking and turn the key and...nothing.
So repeated attempts to start car and nothing just more of the same. What a perfect day to have this happen as it was 3:00 p.m. when it did happen.
Needless to say I'm not driving my mini now but they did give me a 330ci to drive. Who would of thought that I would fit better in my mini than the bmw. Hopefully she comes back tomorrow
