06 R53 remote entry receiver failure

I searched to little avail--

06 R53 with Homelink/autodim rearview mirror. Had the car for a little over a year. Came with one 3 button remote key, which worked fine when I bought it, but over time, the range of the key kept getting shorter and shorter. A few months ago, I had to literally stand next to the DS door, hold the button down, and wave the key around next to the glass until it unlocked. It finally quit completely. I assumed battery was dead, and I needed a second key anyway, so I sprung for a new OEM key. Got the new key to pair successfully, but it only unlocks the doors when the key is within 4" of the rearview mirror. Seems like a defective receiver.

I found this link, where someone had a similar problem: Remote Receiver in Mirror

Looks like he fixed it by replacing the board inside the mirror.

Questions:
  1. Anyone else had any success doing this?
  2. Does anyone have a junk mirror I can try to salvage the board from?
  3. Do all versions of the mirror contain the same receiver?
  4. Is there a difference in receivers/mirrors between pre- and post-facelift cars?

Any help? Particularly, does anyone know if the receiver board is the same for all mirrors, so I can buy a cheaper, non-dimming, non homelink version? Any changes to the board between pre and post face-lift?

I replaced the batteries in my 2006 remotes, the range is still what I would consider short but not that bad. Mine only works within about 10 feet of the car.

I'm sorry I don't have more useful info on this one.

I could work with 10' range. Right now the range is so small I have to be inside the car, which kinda defeats the purpose
