Brown wire with black line and white dots???

So I'm having a little trouble with wiring on my 02 MCS. There's a brown wire with a black tracer and white dots that goes to the 42 pin connector by the driver side fuse box. And it also goes to the fuel pump. It turns into 2 when going to the fuel pump connector. And I'm stumped. Cause unless I've got a jumper wire to it and it connected to a ground plate. None of my gauges turn on or work except for the airbag light. But with it grounded my gauges work. And I don't know if it's supposed to be grounded. I can't find any diagrams for it. And ive had 2 fuel pumps go out on me. And I've got a 3rd coming in. When i put a test light to the fuel pump connection. I had the light turn on and off for the blue and white wire. Which is the relay switch. But I have a very dim light. When I put it to the 2 parts of the connection that is the brown/white/black wire. So I'm don't know if I should ground it or not. Or whether me grounding it is shorting the pumps out. Cause the pumps would work fine for a while. Then just woundnt come on. I'm at a loss. I also spliced in a new 42 pin connector thinking that was my problem cause my old one was super corroded. But that didn't fix it. I'm just stumped.

Hey Chey, I’m having trouble following what your working on. I suck with electrical work so that could be what’s going on....

my two cents. Tackle one issues at a time. Start with the major and work your way to the minor.

i have a link to the wiring diagrams. Let me dig it up. I’ll send over when I find it

Yeah. Sorry. I kind of jump around a lot. I think my main thing I'm running at right now is why I have to ground that brown wire for my gauges to work. And why my fuel pumps keep going out and the diagrams are very appreciated and very helpful

yes sir. I hope the diagrams help. I also found this file "mini cooper 2002-06.rar" that I'm sure I found on this site. I'll try and find out where I downloaded that. you may be able to find it faster than me by searching online? I think its a manual of sorts. might have a copy on my other laptop. I will check.

About the fuel pump, I'd make sure that the tank has enough gas in it to submerge the pump. Sorry if I already said that.

The the new pump came in today when I got home. so now I've got both the pump and the filter assembly. I'll probably throw the mini on Jack's and drop the tank and do both of them at the same time. Then fill her up to full or close to it at least. Then prime the pump a few times God willing it works. And see if she'll run well. I'll search up that link and try and find it. I've been trying to scour my Bentley manual for wiring and everything but none of its color-coded so it's a little hard. Haha.

So I think I found the right diagram for it! But I don't much understand it. It's part of the fuel level sensor. Which explains why even with the new fuel pump and everything It would read empty. But I don't really know where to go from here? It's a little difficult for me to read and discern.

black = fuse number in panel
red = fuse amps rating
blue = connector / plug
green = PIN number in connector / plug
yellow = wire gauge and wire color

All all right. Here's the update. I replaced both the fuel level sending unit and the fuel pump. And I now have a working gas gauge. But I still have to ground the brown wire to get the gauges to turn on. But I'm currently now at a standstill because the mini won't start. She'll crank all day long. But she won't fire up. I sprayed some starting fluid in the intake port and she cranked up very roughly. so I've come to the conclusion that no fuels getting up there. But I don't know how. I've got all the lines and connections connected to both the fuel pump and fuel filter and the fuel pump works. So I don't know how there is not any fuel getting up there?

Sounds like no fuel to the cylinders.

fuel pressure test or just remove the rail and see if you have gas spray...

do you hear the pump prime?

Yes, i heard the pump prime. I did a little messing around with the fuel filter and somehow that fixed it and she cranked up. I drove her around a little for the first time and it was great minus me not having power steering. But when i pulled her back in the driveway, she died on me and just would click when i tried to crank her. So i think my alternator i put in there is bad so ive bought a new one. And i hope once i put that one in it solves my power steering issue too. Cause i read a lot that if the alternator isn't working the car will shut off the power steering to save battery

Alright, so i put the new alternator in but my battery is still not charging, my next course of action is to replace the battery. I guess i'll do that today but i don't know if that's part of my problem or not.

im not too sure what the inpa set up is so i don't think i have it. I got a new battery and it was still not getting charging amps but my negative terminal doesn't tighten down cause its stripped so maybe that could be it.

inpa is bmw’s diagnostic software. Thinking it could help you sort out the car. See my post on this forum named “inpa” for all the detail if you think it might help you.

as for the battery. I think your on the right track. Need to get that fixed first

alright, ill take a look at that forum. Im going to get her towed to One Way Automotive BMW and Mini specialist in Little Rock so they can do the wiring and fix any other problems that are concurrent so i can have her back on the road sooner rather than later.
