try hitting the plastic just under the bumper below the engine...see if it is in there...if so you can get it...other wise...keep looking you'll find it...I have had friends drop stuff when working with me on thier minis...we just kept looking...eventually you find it...tucked just out if sight...right where you looked 8 million times...good luck

FWIW, try tying a magnet to a string and go fishing!

I lost an intercooler bolt in the fan area. Here's how I got it back:

Loosen the 3 bolts on the bottom side of the air dam & also the 2 phillips dzus-thingies that hold on the plastic shield under the engine.
Pull the shield toward the rear of the car & it'll come off.
Now you have access to the fan area.
Take a magnet & troll the bottom of the newly exposed fan shroud.
Your socket lies here, Padawan.

You can buy a magnet that is at the end of an antennae at an auto parts store. Use that to fish the socket out. Don’t let this discourage you. Defecation occurs - just don't get your euphemisms mixed up and make lemonade out of it!

I've done that before too You'll need to jack up the front end and put on jack stands. Slide under and remove the plastic skid pan from bottom of bumper which will expose the bottom of fan. Then reach up with your "little" hand and grab whatever fell in there Pain in the A$$ but there's no other way as you can't see the part to grab it from above. Good luck.

Is the fan an electric one that will run with the car off? If so, to be on the safe side you should disconnect the battery before digging around in there.

You might be able to get lucky with one of these:

Get the magnet - I helped my friend mod his power steering and had to remove a small piece out of a flow control value - I thought he needed some needle nose pliers to get that sucker out - but man that magnet was so strong it sucked it right out.

I've had to take my bumper/air dam apart on two different occassions because my 3-year-old helper tossed something down the front of the engine.
Go ahead and open it up. It's only a few bolts to get in there, and hitting the plastic and trying to listen might not work.
