Magnetic Oil drain plug

Is the standard Mini Cooper Oil drain plug magnetic?
If not, should it be and have people changed it out?

The one in my Countryman was not. I replaced it with a magnetic plug from ECS Tuning.

It is not typical for the engine oil drain plug to be magnetic. Usually it’s just the transmission and differentials that have magnetic plugs. That being said, I also changed mine out for magnetic one from ECS tuning.

No the stock drain plug isn't magnetic. We do offer these really affordable magnetic drain plugs for the Gen 2

The only thing I DON'T like about the magnetic oil drain plug is since the oil pan is steel, the magnet wants to stick to the pan instead of going into the hole. Makes it slightly more annoying to replace the plug after an oil change.

Well has anyone ever found any metal flakes on there? I think it would be more indicative that you might have a problem.

I haven't done a drain and fill since I installed it.

There’s a little black metal dust
on the magnet that I wipe off with
each oil change. Haven’t had a
chance to check the transmission
one yet.

i have dimple for both engine and transmission on my 2009 fJCW for more than 6 years.

It does help to show the health of the engine and transmission with every oil change.
