Getrag MT285 bearing replacement

anyone replaced bearings in a mt285 getrag 6 speed? My jcw gearbox is making quite a bit of noise in 4th gear at light load. JUst got my bearing rebuilt kit, and I have a blind puller set from my motorcycle racing days

anything I should be aware of? I found a service doc for the 5 speed but I have not found one for the 6 speed

I would watch a few YouTube videos on that trans to get a visual on how it's done. I have done the 5 speed and the biggest difficulty I had was the sealed bearings. Don't try to push them into the case because you will break the case. Instead, you will need to drive the shafts through the bearings but do it simultaneously as the gears are meshed.

I've been in these before doing LSD installs. I have not found a video on bearing replacements, they all stop at the diff removal

I go into it a bit on my 5 speed videos. I would not replace the sealed bearings unless you have to but the others are simple since you have the blind hole puller.

my blind hole puller was not large enough, had to order one that goes up to 55mm

I was going to replace the sealed bearings but I could not figure out how to get the snap ring off, gave up as they felt fine.

It's probably for the best as I don't think they are a major issue (but... I could be wrong!) As for how the snap rings come off, the forces of the engine torque acting upon the shafts tend to push or pull the shafts just enough to dsqueeze the snap rings tight in the groove. In order to get them off, you must first move the shaft with a large directional impact device (BFH or equivalent) relative to the bearing to restore the 128th of an inch needed to unstick the snap ring. Only then will you be able to get it out. Also, one shaft moves inwards and one outwards due to the nature of how the forces work in a helical gear set. So, one will be tight on the shaft and the other is tight in the bore.
