Rebuilt alternator, high voltage over 6000 rpm

Alternator failed on me. Tried a duralast alternator and it puts out 17 volts over 6000 rpm, the power steering fails! the steering comes back after a few seconds when the votls drop down again. I figured bad luck, got a carquest alternator instead, same thing! Ground straps are good, car runs fine but over 6000 the voltage jumps, radio/amp cuts out, and the power steering pump shuts off.

anyone had this happen?

Did you measure 17V at the battery terminals? I suspect not. If the battery is not in the circuit, you likely will have the symptom that you experienced. Measure the voltage across the terminals - at the lead Pb posts and not the clamps.

17 is what the ECU logged and reported on canbus and on my datalogger, right when the power steering pump and radio amp turn off, kinda scary when the steering pump shuts off at high speed

I think there are a big bunch of grounding wires by the circular connector by the left side hood latch. That must be where the ECU grounding is at. That may not be the problem. Check the B+ jump start plastic box too.

If all else fails, try remove both battery cables and lick them with your tongue. This is a joke.

The chassy to engine ground is next to the passenger engine mount, already checked it.

Couple friends warned me that cheap rebuilt do this, I thought I might get lucky and not have to cancel a track day. Still a chance, calling another dealer tomorrow and a lead on a used alternator

I am actually referring to the multiple grounding wires to the chassis by the circular connector on the driver side hood latch. But assuming you verified the original alternator was indeed bad and the symptom occur with the first and then the second alternator, your friend's experience may be true. Still I find that hard to believe. This points to the integrated regulator fails to do the basic job from multiple brands. I find that rather unlikely.

The alternator that failed Tuesday failed the bench tests at autozone, and output zero volts in the car

Here you can see where the voltage spikes at 6000 rpm from 14.2 to 16.69, then again at 6800 rpm to 17.14 (this is when power steering shuts off) then a little more to 17.56 at 7300 rpm. I log at 1hz so the jumps are most likely just due to the logging interval

the data logger is reading the voltage from the obd2 wires directly, that is where it gets it's power

I am with you that the two alternators are bad, and must use the regulators from the same source. Very common for cut rate Chinese made products to be sold under many brandings.

One thing might tide you over is to see if you can transfer the brushes from the cheap alternator to your failed alternator. Worn brushes are often the cause of them outputting nothing. Being cheap rebuild they brushes may not be the same dimensions though.

Crossing my fingers the dealer in Charlotte may have one in stock. If not I found two used, hoping one of them is a bosch or denso
