Broken Spring in OFH?

Been going back and forth with Mike at ECS on a private message, so thought I would post this for anyone else's troubles. I searched and didn't find anything on point for the R56.

When doing my OFHG change, I discovered there was a loose spring (plastic in the middle that looks broken off) in the OFH. Can anyone confirm whether this is necessary to stay in the OFH? It looks like my prior owner just jammed it in there, and it has sort of crushed/bent the prior filter. See pics, thanks in advance!
