Having trouble setting locking pin in flywheel

I’ve got a 2011 Mini Cooper S and I’m replacing the timing chain but need to lock the cams and crank. The In and EX markings are straight up all pistons are even and with a mirror I can see the locking hole in the flywheel but I can’t seem to get the pin set in all the way.

Where did you get the locking set from? If it's one of those Ebay specials, the diameter my be a little too large. I had to use a belt sander to turn it down so it would fit into the hole in the engine block. I also had to turn the pin down so it would fit into the hole in the flywheel.

My timing tool was bought on Amazon. Cheapest one they had. Works perfect but I took a strip of 240 sandpaper and twirled the end a bit to just remove the coating. The pin is supposed to be a very tight fit and once your on the flywheel hole you may have to tap it in a bit. I couldn't get mine in either and had one hand on the ratchet and one one the pin. I moved the crank back and forth until I was sure I was over the hole. It has a bit of dirt and corrosion in the hole this is why it needs to be tapped in. After that it went in and out rather easily. Good luck.

I bought it from freedom racing it was $170 or so and I’ve sanded it down and took a couple thousands off at work. Also I’ve froze it to shrink it down a bit but haven’t tried tapping it in was afraid I might not be able to get it out. But it’s worth a shot. Do either of you know the size it’s supposed to be? I’ve tried looking on the internet but can’t find anything on an exact size so I know where to start.

did you try locking pliers? spry penetrating oil and slowly work it out. Dont panic, it will release eventually.

I bought a cheap locking kit on amazon and the pin tool did not fit. I ground down the entire tool, case and flywheel pins. Was getting mad because the book says that you don't need to turn the crank much to insert it. I decided to grind down the pin and it fit perfectly into the hole and could feel it making contact with the fly wheel. A few turns of the crank and I found the hole. Just grind/sand down the pin because it should fit enough into the hole to make contact with the flywheel, or buy the more expensive kits.

hey I just did the timing chain on my 2009 S, I had the same problem the locking pin was very tight. I ended up cleaning out the hole with a fine wire brush and lubing the pin with some oil. When inserting the pin I worked it allot to get it loose in the outer hole and then was able to get it to drop, I used a mirror to center the inner hole also but at that angle you have to position the mirror so you can tell it's centered, allot of guys use a video scope, but the timing locks expensive enough. If your chain is still on, you can try installing the cam locks first to center the crank lock hole, but take them off so you free the engine in case you need to adjust the crank to get it to drop. Mine did take allot of force to get it in. Mine was so tight I wasn't sure it was in untill I attempted to rotate the crank shaft.

Well hell I just realized I responded from my email notification and didn't see all the updates. If I can afford it I always get mini or bmw tools if available Schwaben next, I used the Schwaben locks and they were super tight.

I used a mid priced one, and the first time I put it in she was tight and i didn't think it was gonna work... Just turned it a bit and worked it in. I later rechecked my timing a fair few times post the timing chain replacement and she slides right in... perhaps this is due to practice, or that the hole is just clean now, who knows but it works good now.
