Serpentine Belt Alignment Issues

I had bad clunking noise coming from my drive belt tensioner when I started the car cold. So I replaced the drive belt tensioner thinking it got old. While replacing I noticed the alternator pulley wasn't even aligned with any other pulleys. So moved the alternator over as much as possible to be aligned, got it aligned after some small modifications. Well the next morning I started my car and the noise was back and the belt started to shred. Replaced the belt hoping it had a defect, nope and the noise is back. All pulleys are in working order and bearings are good. Any help would be great this car is going to drive me nuts. I cant even drive it at the moment.

my only recommendation is to clean the grooves on the pulleys. Also, check the water pump pulley for missing parts. finally, if you completely remove the belt, do you still have the noise?

What do you mean you moved the alternator over? It's not adjustable. What modifications did you make? Pictures please.

Be careful with that alternator pulley. Last year my wife's 09 MCS alternator went out. I went to Autozone and went through 3 of them, all shredding the new belts I also put on. Then I went to O'Reilley's to pull their alternator. Turns out, O'Reilley's alternator pulley has a little spacer before the grooves, that took care of the problem. I guess that our episode of the mis-alignment issue. Don't go to Autozone for that Duralast junk.

When you get your new alternator, make sure to compare the pulley spacing and make sure the grooves are at exactly the same locations, or else you'll have issues with shredding belts.
