Starter Button
Starter Button
Has anyone installed a starter button? I've seen them for sale in various catalogs and wonder if this is a major installation problem? The button replaces the lighter and is pushed after the key is turned to the second position. Thanks.....
I assume it's for the "coolness" factor. Ferrari uses a push button as well as Honda on the S2000. True........just give it another twist, but I imagine it has to do with racing heritage and the push button start Le mans cars? Just an inquirery. There must have been a market for such an item, if not, why the development?

re: push button starter...
I assume you are talking about Moss MINI part #101-180 $59.95.
**The catch is you still have to use your ignition key to switch on the ignition & to unlock your steering column to get it to work
kinda silly if you ask me. To have to put the key in for it to work. Why not just turn your key another step.
Putting the key in move it to start than reach down and press a button... kinda defeats the purpose of a press button ignition ya'think?

Sure do.......Just didn't know the point behind it. Yes, I saw this in the Moss Catalog!

if the button were removable and would send the "code" to the ignition the same as the key, then it would be pretty sweet I think... you could just pop the button off and take it with you, then when you got back to your car, pop it in and hit it. But then it is really no different than the key... just a different shape...
The point of it is to look cool. If you think it looks cool (I think it does, but I wouldn't give up the power outlet) then go for it... I imagine that it isn't too hard to install.

Gee, I had a floor starter on my 1960 Morris 850. We thought the coolest thing was going to the "key turn" starter on the dashboard, like on my 1964 Austin Cooper "S" 1275. "The more things change, the more they stay the same." In the long term, it doesn't make any difference whatsoever!
I'm one of those people love when sports cars have start buttons...kind of a huge shame they didn't do it with the new MINI considering it already has toggle switches. It's just screaming for a start button. It's not a convenience thing, just a style/fun thing...reminds me of old school (and modern school) racers...oil pump on, fuel pump on, hit the red button, "VROOM", enjoy!
I've also been eyeing aftermarket start button installs, but have yet to commit to taking the plunge myself. Plus, as mentioned, I would miss having the accesory plug for my cell charger. I also recall some people having to do some odd trimming under that center piece to get the start buttons to fit correctly, which also made me kind of nervous...can't remember if that applied to the Moss MINI kit. Not to mention I'm also having trouble convincing myself to spend $200 for a button, even after considering how much of a kick I'd get from it every day.

I had a starter button installed on a previous Porsche 911, and you still had to put the ignition key for reasons noted above, but if you turned it to the start position, nothing would happen. The starter button was hidden, but easy reach, and you pushed the button to activate the starter. It was a security issue more than just a cool factor.
The new proximity keys, like in the C6 corvette is the way to go if your into that kind of thing.

(nostalgia hijack?)
Here's what I remember:
My 1950 Studebaker start switch was on the floor, under the clutch (shove the clutch against it to start). Also had hillholder brakes, 7-button radio, suicide rear doors, crank-up antenna, Overdrive.
1953 Mercury had a button on the dash.
I think I'll keep switching the starter with the key.
