2008 R55 Cooper S - Multiple Problems - Advice needed

So I bought a used Cooper Clubman S from a Mini Dealer. Within 2 days noticed smoke from under the hood occasionally. Took to another mini dealer who told me it was a major leak around the Oil Filter housing $1300 repair. Since I had the car I had a check engine light come on once (no reduced power). Dealer when diagnosing the car stated two error codes for High Pressure Fuel Pump and 02 Sensor. Started to take the car home and within 1/4 mile got check engine light and limp mode so returned to the dealer and left the car. They reported the same faults but said it was OK to take the car. Within 15 minutes of leaving a second time I got check engine light an Limp mode again. Also car would not go into 5th or 6th gear (Manual) as I couldn't move the stick to the right to select them (could this have been something that got missed when they did the repair on the oil filter housing? Also with the two original check engine codes being present and the big oil leak I feel like I didn't get full disclosure from the first Mini dealer? Or am I just ridiculously unlucky? Oh and also the diagnostic printout from Mini shows the mileage as 113,000 to 114,000 on the error codes but the vehicle only has 70,000 miles which I find confusing any explanation?

The HPFP should be cover under warranty and that would take care of the limp mode. The oil filter houseing leak is a common issue but not being able to shift into 5th or 6th is a new one. I’d say it has to do with the shift linkage.

Thanks! Turns out the gear shift problem was pine cones and acorns! HPFS is just over 10 years old so I'm out of luck there! I'm still confused about the diagnostic printout Mini gave me with the mileage reading on there in the 112,000 to 114,000 region but the odometer only reads 70,000

Just be thankful that this didn’t happen a year ago when new pumps were fetching $1200 now that they are a reasonable $300 it’s an easy fix. Won’t take you more then an half hour.

I would start by finding the list of their requirements to sell a used car. Dealers always have a XXXX point inspection they have done prior to putting a car for sale. So find that and for sure someone didn't actually do it and I feel they should be responsible to fix anything that the inspection would have found unless they advised you prior to purchase.

Check the vin on the print out. In the past iv heard of shady shops giving people printouts from different cars to get you to use them for the "repairs". Definitely check out your states lemon laws usually they give you at min 30 days or 1,000 mile warranty or something similar, I know in MA that the dealer is responsible to make the vehicle pass a state safety and emissions inspection. but lemon laws vary from state to state.

Thanks for all the advice, one last question, anything specific I should look for in a fuel pump? There seem to be plenty on Ebay for example.

Thanks again.

Well, I replaced the fuel pump but now getting check engine light and going into limp mode almost immediately. Autozone free check engine light says "Fuel pressure too high" am I missing something or didi I just get unlucky? It's an OSIAS brand fuel pump.

Wish I had seen this earlier. after 22 years with BMWs and 13 with minis, unless you’re purchasing a brand that is known upgrade for stick with OE or OEM.
FCPEuro.com identifies OE and OEM up front. Some no name brand parts have been known to be bad out of the box.

Did you get a code?

So, I have bought a "genuine" mini pump now. Is there any way to visually confirm it is the genuine article?

No idea on how to tell if the pump is genuine but the high fuel pressure CEL might be caused by a faulty Fuel pressure sensor.

Hi, yes my first 120 dollar chinese pump went to limp home mode immediately, I bought an OEM one from parts container for about $450 and have not had a problem so far and no check engine codes. I also messagedbthe original seller and they gave me a pretty good refund percentage on the basis one AND did not want it returned.
