Side to side play in shifter

I have an 05 MCS. Recently the shifter has started to have some movement from side to side when it’s in gear. Is there an adjustment that can be done or does it need to be replaced?

A little side to side movement is not a big deal. I never driven a manual that didn’t have a little play. Should t be any fore and aft movement.

I too agree the vigorous side to side moments are likely nothing to be obsessed. It is the fore and aft play that matter most.

I agree alittle isn’t bad but this moves almost an inch. Other manuals I’ve driven didn’t move this much. Also it seems to be getting worse.

The ends of the shift cables may be wearing out. They have rubber on the ends that deteriorates.

There is a small plastic square bushing inside the mechanism on the outside of the transmission housing (which the shift cables connect to) which wears out. It's a 20 dollar part shipped that you can replace and removes all the slop in the side to side movement of the shifter.
