play in shifter:( :( how to?

hey guys....i have a 04 5 spd IS300.

My buddy has an RSX-type S, and im getting ready to buy my girl a 05' coop S.

the reason i mentioned the RSX-type S, is because it suffers the same flaw as the cooper S.

which i am very dissapointed about.

when compared to my Lex. which has no shifter play what so ever.

it almost makes the coopers shifter assembly feel cheap and toyish. which i know its not. "getrag tranny"

But i hate it.

i was wondering if any of you guys made kits or knew a way to rid the S of this toyish shifter feel!

i dont think there is a short shift kit out for the 05's yet, unless the 04 shift kits work for 05. you'll have to ask a vendor on that one (try randy webb, he is apparently a VERY knowledgeable person on all things mini aftermarket).

Also, if you're referring to that side to side play on the mini, i completely agree... that looseness really bothers me, and this is my first manual. ugh.

BUT! if and when b&m comes out with the 04 and on short shift kits, you can get it. I messed around with a b&m kit installed monster 240 silvia conversion, and that thing was quite perfect.

other than that, you can do the old cut the shaft down trick. that'll reduce... everything.

what's your girl going to get you for christmas? i hope something good!

There is some play and give in the MCS shifter, but not enough to screw up my shifts. I don't plan on getting a shortshifter either...I really don't think it's necessary.

Id like to get a new **** for aesthetic reasons and also because
my **** as a tread that sticks out the side which cuts my finger from
time to time if I don't put a piece of e-tape on it.

werd^^

but yeah im talking about the side to side play.

ive read somewhere else that the SS doest fix the side to side play. I hate it.

the main question is if anyone knows how to fix the problem.

ive got a Prolexperformance SS on my IS300....and the shifter feels fantastic. Short Crisp throws. ZERO play

Warning: Sarcastic!

My gears are in a longitudinal format, dunno about yours. My spring detents are functional too, which means transitioning between rows is as easy as letting the springs do their job.

One critical mistake in your comparison; FWD cars will never...did I say never? Yes...NEVER, have the shift quality of a RWD car. It's the nature of the beast. FWD cars use long cables to operate intricate levers and arms that actuate the transmission. RWD cars use sturdy rods, or are directly connected to the transmission. The comparisons are inappropriate, IMO.

Inappropriate? Perhaps... if you are applying some kind of contrived handicapping system. Bottom line is that the Mini shift feel definitely does not compare favorably with good rwd machines.

I wasn't planning on getting a short shifter either, but I had a chance to try a couple at Steve's Auto in here in North Hills and am am convinced that it is absolutely necessary. I don't know why I've gone without. In my opinion it takes out varying degrees of play (depending on the shifter) and give you a much smoother, crisper shift.

well i didnt mean to directly compare and contrast the two cars.....just throwing an example out there.

i just wanted to know if anyone had come up with a way to make the MINI shifts even compare with my IS300

Was that the one that changes the length under the car, or the
lever itself? I think the lever height inside the car is where I would
want to keep my ****.

What I do is put the car in 1st gear and see if I can extend my
pinky and thump to reach the steeringwheel. If I can't, usually the
length of the lever is too short for me while Im driving sprirtedly.

Obviously for people with big hands the lever could be shortened
quite a bit and considered within reach.

Wonder how well the Pilo racing one does... anyone know?
