6 speed shifter side play

So, I have this '06 MCSC with a 6 speed. I put in a Helix short shift gizmo, which reduced the throw of the stock shifter to something tolerable. I also put on a Whalen ****, which I like. The only thing I don't like now is the side to side play in the shifter. I guess the thing shifted so sloppily before the improvements I made, the side play was just one problem in a series of many that contributed to the general sloppiness of the stock shifter. Now that I've eliminated some factors, the side play is more noticable to me. Has anyone taken the time to figure out where the side play comes from, and found any solutions to it? I probably have something approaching an inch of play. If I can get rid of it, that'd be nice.

It's controlled by 2 springs on the bell crank shaft inside the gearbox. That's how I see it.

Hunh. I was assuming it was in the shifter itself, and not on the other end of the cable in the tranny. I never would have guessed!

6 speed lock out

Here's a related thought (somewhat).

During my last performance driving school, I missed a few shifts. My instructer joked that I had too many gears to choose from! (He drives a four speed)

I'm beginning to think that he might have something there. Maybe it would be usefull to have a mechanism that temporarily locks out reverse, 1st and 2nd once you've gotten into 3rd. After that you could slam back and forth through 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th with no worries of hitting 1st or 2nd at speed.

What do you think?

I suppose you could swap out springs to 'bias' the bell crank shaft springs towards the 3-4-5-6 gates.

In my opionion the shifter/linkage/gear selecting works fine. No slamming with me.
