Key-remote
Dealership. Unfortunately the keys are coded to the VIN and cannot be reprogrammed. Several folks have bought them online and then found that they were useless because they cannot be programmed. Some dealerships have online discounts but when I replaced mine recently, Seattle MINI, who is the nearest one to me, gave me the same price I found online. $150 for a fob for a 2012 R60 without comfort access. With C/A it is closer to $300.
Good luck

You will need to prove ownership before they will order it also. So you need your drivers license and registration to order it.
I thought they said it had to come from BMW headquarters in Germany, but I don’t know, because it was there, ready to pick up 2 days later. Wherever they come from, they get them to you pretty darn quick.

The fob is programmed at factory, specific to your VIN. Mine doesn’t have the physical key, just a fob, but unless you have comfort access, that sounds a little high, maybe check some other MINI dealers online. If I remember correctly, Massachusetts MINI had the best online price and the local dealership then matched it.
Try MINI of Peabody in Massachusetts (minipartsmass.com). They discount all their parts, including keys. A remote key for your car should run about $135 and a non-remote one should run $80 or so.
