Welding on MINI

2013 Justa.

I chased a mid range exhaust shield buzz down the rat hole, I think I found the cause.

See photo of crack in lower heat shield.

I can get my MIG gun on it & have it stitched up in a few minutes.

What should I do to protect electronics?

Is disconnecting the battery enough?

Thanks for your advice in advance!

When you ground your welding machine to the car make sure you have good contact. Even better grind a little patch to make sure you have a good ground

disconnect BOTH battery cables

old school was just one but with all the computer crud in cars today I've been told time and time again

disconnect BOTH

(volunteer 'helper' at a HS VOTEC autobody repair school at one time)

p.s. ya know that IME most MINI heat shields are aluminum . . . just sayin' ... maybe check first if not 100% sure. Or perchance it IS and you know that but have an alum' spool gun for your MIG unit . . .

Ya I checked with magnet 1st thing. It is aluminized steel, I can live with a little rust around the weld.

It will just take a few tacks.

It looks like work to remove the entire shield, so I want to weld it on-the-car.

The reason I asked was that I found out that welding on a Prius is a no-no without disconnecting a bunch of stuff.

Thanks for everyone's help!
