Help. Stuck at Autozone. Trying to pull codes

I have a 2010 R56. At autozone now. Check engine light on. Can’t pull codes because check engine light won’t come on when car isn’t on and key is just in ignition. Once I start the car the check engine light comes on. They say they can’t help me.

How do I get the light to come on with just the key. What are we doing wrong?

Put the key in, press the start button, but don't depress the clutch or brake. This should put the car in ON mode without being started.

Thanks for the suggestions but it wouldn’t work. Autozone only had a code scanner. Not a diagnostic scanner. The check engine light would not come on with just the key in the ignition so they referred me to a place that actually works on Mini’s. I live in the land of the lost. Nearest Mini dealer is over 100 miles away. The shop pulled 5 diagnostic codes for compression, misfiring and I believe fuel mixture. I saw the screen for all of 2 secs. They cleared the codes and tried to get them to come back on. They didn’t. Regardless, I have an appt there on m Monday for a tune up and then we’ll take it from there. The car has never had anything other than oil changes and brakes. It has 60k on it. Rarely driven anymore since I work from home...but with a potential hurricane on the way, I need it to run safely so we can evacuate if need be. I’ll fill everyone in on Monday. It’s been 2-3 weeks of issues ever since I added the 10W-30. I made a other post on here when that first happened but I don’t thi knanyone ever replied to it. It’s been a nightmare.
