Hi all.
2010 MCS. I have done the front brakes twice now and really easy to do. Tried to do the rears since they are getting low and the lower bolt for the left rear will not loosen so I didn't even try the others.
I am assuming the same "righty-tighty, lefty-loosy" applies to these bolts? I know they have some blue locktite on them.
Are there any tricks I can use to get it out? I bought a new 13mm closed-end and a new 13mm socket in hopes of getting a good grip on it...no luck. It started to round off the head. I didn't want to damage it further.
Soak them overnight in some sort of fluid. I hear brake fluid works well?! Hammer the socket on a little to make sure its on there good and support it while turning. Get a breaker bar and go easy.
Mine were actually stretched, so I replaced them. The sight of a stretched bolt is shocking. I was SOO happy they dint break off. Check this out:
2 Minute paint remover has the chemical that Loctite recommends for cleaning off the blue. Don't know if it penetrates the threads when in place. I used acetone to clean up the bolts I removed from other parts of my MINI.
Done!
I got a can of that "B'Laster Catalyst" and tapped the bolt a couple of times and easy peazy!!
I did buy the Irwin Bolt Extractor set, but didn't need it. Also got a cheapie brake rewind kit off Amazon...I love saving money! They wanted more than $600 for just the rear brake replacement!
If there is nothing around to worry about heat. (Which I am sure isn't a priblem) heat it good with a torch. If a torch is an option it's my first go to.
second being a good penetrating oil over night as a minimum.
