Passenger side axel help

can't for the life of me figure out how to get the half of the axel that goes into the tranny out... The axel nut and that end came out finally after an hour of banging and troubleshooting with no power tools... can anyone tell me what I need to get the other half out.. I read a thread of here somewhere about there being a clip but I do not see one or maybe I don't know what I'm looking for.. although it is covered in grease from the broken boot. any advice would be appreciated

The passenger side axle is in two parts. It includes a bearing in a housing that is bolted to the subframe. That bearing is on the portion of the axle that connects to the transmission. There are three bolts that attach that housing. Their removal can be accomplished without the car on a lift, but it is not easy. Good luck.

sorry, I am no mechanic so bare with my silly questions here. the second half of the axel.. that goes into the tranny side, with the bearing in the housing.. that can be removed taking the bolts off? Meaning get the housing off and it'll allow that half to come out? My trouble is figuring out how it even comes out of there. From online research I came to the conclusion there was a clip or clamp that needs to be popped out with a lot of force. i have limited knowledge and limited to what I can do myself but from what I've read it can be done without needing to go to a shop.

No. There is a circlip on the driver's side axle, on the splined portion that slips into the transmission, but not on the passenger's side.

You sound uncomfortable with this task. I would strongly recommend that you get qualified assistance. You could end up causing additional costly problems.

i must have ended up reading about the drivers side. thanks for the clarification ☺️ My fiancé would have had the axle's*switched out by now, but I had the day off and figured I know What needs to be done why can't I do it myself.*Got this far without him*just*misunderstood how to go about getting the remaining part off. I'm always a little uncomfortable doing something I've never done before but wouldn't make an attempt if I didn't think I could succeed at it. thank you so much for the input ☺️☺️ Always so much help from this forum.*

Passenger side axle slides straight out once the bearing carrier has been unbolted from the engine block (3-bolts) where it connects.

The driver side axle differs from the passenger side axle in that it has a snap-ring (circlip) integrated into the end which engages an internal recess, thus holding it into place. Because of that system, the axle needs to be “popped” out of place with a quick motion of a longish pry bar.

The Mod MINI video (below) shows the exact technique at about 19:40 in...

just be careful when using big flat material to go in between the axle and the transmission(driver side), but i you plan to replace the seal its ok its going to be smashed. Best is to hit the axle away from the seal and have someone pull it, how i know? I dropped my transmission and when i removed both axle i pried the driver side with big flat screw driver and it poped ok, when i look at the seal there’s indentation in the surface of the seal, i plan to put a new seal though.
FYI

Use a long prybar in the style of the one Mod MINI uses (cheap @ Harbor Freight), with the same action he demonstrates, and it'll pop right out just as with the video, with no damage to the seal.

we are replacing the seal as well, but I'll still be sure to tell him careful not to do any damage to that side thank you ☺️ Does anyone happen to know what size bolts hold the bearing housing on? For the passenger side?

Three bolts; 13mm wrench needed.

Looks like you are headed in the right direction.

The carrier bearing that you will be unbolting might need to transfered to the new axle, so don't get rid of it until you confirm if you need the part or not. It's just a snap ring that holds it in place, which can be rather hard sometimes to remove. Then its just a matter of knocking the carrier off the old shaft.

i did notice that would have to be transferred, took some careful hammering but came off. ☺️ the clip would have been so much easier if one of the prongs on our snap ring pliers wasn't slightly broken, it became a team effort of holding the prongs into the little circle grooves and using a flathead for leverage when it tried to snap back

This was pretty much my same issue as well in getting the snap ring out even with a new set of pliers and doing it solo.
