DSC definitely works with the ABS, so yes, it might be linked with the DSC lamp coming on intermittently.

Also could be a bad wheel speed sensor.

A visit to a qualified shop with a dealer-grade scan tool would be able to pinpoint whether that’s the case.

If you think it's wheel/tire related you could try rotating the tires and see if the noise moves around with them.

Well, it’s been a long, hard road, but I feel like I’m nearing the finish line. Transmission had a leak. Got it sealed back up again. Also discovered coolant is getting into the oil. Discovered it’s leaking into cylinder 1. That explains the higher fuel delivery reading from the ecu and the hesitation/hard start up when warm. So, car needs a new head gasket. I’m probably going to go ahead and have them change out the oil cooler gasket for good measure and flush out the coolant system.

Update

car is finished. The noise issue was With the cylinder head. It was warped slightly and causing a coolant leak that was slowly getting worse. I’m glad I noticed the oil having a slight creamy look to it. No damage to the cylinders other than some minor staining from the coolant on the walls. Engine was actually in great shape internally other than the warped head. New head installed and replaced the timing chain, all new gaskets and seals, cleaned the oil off the engine and flushed everything. All new fluids and so far, no leaks. Also replaced the tensioner and the harmonic balancer (crank pulley). She runs super smooth now! A lot better than before! I haven’t taken it out yet for a good long drive, but plan to do that this evening. Thank God it’s finally over! Only $4700 in repairs, but I think it was worth it. I want to keep this car as long as I can! Always wanted this gen cooper S, and I will keep it running.
