New Member, MINI having issues (CEL, loss of power, etc!)
Hello all!
New member here.... have a newish-to-me MINI that seems to be having some bad issues. I just posted in the wrong forum I think, so I'm re-posting here and deleting my other one. Whoops!
I bought my 2008 Mini Cooper S Turbo about a year ago. It had some issues about 3 months ago with the CEL coming on and it was misfiring, took it to the dealer and they said that it needed a carbon clean and new ignition coils, so I had that done. I mention this because most of the searches I've done suggest doing a carbon clean, but I suspect that's not it in this case because I just had it professionally done... so now I'm at a loss :/
It's been great for the last 3 months. About 3 days ago I was driving it and I noticed something weird, but I couldn't tell if this always happens and I just never noticed, or if it's new: When I drive on the highway, and I let off the accelerator, the RPMs don't drop. Like, if i'm going 65-70 and the RPMs are at 3.5k or so, and I take my foot entirely off the gas, the RPMs stay at 3.5k. They'll drop as the car slows down and comes to a complete stop. I kind of feel like it used to drop down to idle speed when I would let off the accelerator, but not 100% sure. But it just.... felt different, and that's the only thing I could notice that was different. Check Engine Light wasn't on, and it wasn't really affecting things, so I just kept driving it.
So then yesterday, I was driving on the freeway and the check engine light came on (the yellow one, not the scary red one.... i guess the yellow one is "loss of engine power" or something). It seemed fine other than the RPMs thing. Then, like half an hour later, the engine suddenly got really.... almost quiet. Like it sounded muffled, almost, and I realized that I was flooring it and barely hitting 55 MPH. I exited and stopped for lunch, and left the hood open to let it cool down, and when I started back up in an hour or so, the CEL was off and it seemed to be driving fine.
About 10 minutes later, the CEL came back on. At this point, the engine sometimes sounds quiet and muffled, and sometimes sounds normal. But the biggest weird thing is that the accelerator pedal seems slow. Like, it feels like I have to push it was further to get it to go (like it is having power loss, which makes sense with the CEL), but also like it's just slower to respond. Sometimes it's fine, but sometimes I'll floor it for 5 seconds, and it will do nothing for ~10 seconds and then all of a sudden the engine will rev up like I'm just now flooring it, but it's 10 seconds after I pushed the pedal, but while my foot is off the gas.
And, and this seems to happen mostly on startup, sometimes I will hit the gas and nothing will happen. Yesterday I started it up after a few hour break, and it turned on and idled fine, but when I hit the accelerator, nothing happened. It just stayed at idle. I was hitting the gas for probably a solid minute, barely pushing it down, flooringit, everything, and it was like the pedal was disconnected. Just stayed at idle. It's not like it revved but wouldn't engage.... it would even move past idle. And then, all of a sudden, it just kicked in and worked. This happens on a smaller scale even at stoplights and stuff, where it'll just be like my gas pedal is disconnected for like 5-10 seconds (much more rare after i've been driving for a while). And then suddenly it just decides to work. I've also only managed to get this issue in drive. This is not to say that it won't happen in neutral or reverse, but I haven't gotten it to happen yet, and it just SEEMS to rev better and smoother in neutral than in drive?
These are weird issues... I took it to get scanned at my local Napa auto parts and they said that there are no codes showing up on their scanner, and thought that maybe MINI requires a special (and really expensive) scanner, so I have no idea what the codes are. my dealer appointment is in 2 weeks :/
UPDATE: Just got a different scan at a different auto shop.... they said that it was kicking back 12 codes. Will post them at the bottom!
Does this sound like any kind of known problem with MINIs? Is there something I can try in the meantime, so I can drive it? Is it even safe to drive? I don't want to ruin it by driving it or something. I have no idea if any of these issues are related, but they all showed up at the same general time (the RPMs sticking up high, the power loss, and the failure to accelerate).
Any help or insights would be very appreciated, thank you in advance!!!
