New Pool of Oil Near Vacuum Pump and Filter Housing

I thought I licked the vacuum pump leak with a new gasket, but I noticed an oil burning smell the past few days and I just discovered this new pool of oil below the vacuum pump and below the oil filter housing. I've added some pictures to show where it is relative to other things like the oil filter housing and vacuum pump. Around the vacuum pump wasn't 'wet' and neither was around the oil filter housing, so I'm a little stumped where this is coming from. Any thoughts?
  1. Is this still from the vacuum pump? It still seems a little far to "jump" from the vacuum pump, plus the O ring was recently changed, and I don't see or feel any obvious leaks;
  2. Is this from the oil filter housing? Again, seems a little far and I can only feel a bit of "old" dirty oil residue at the bottom of the housing and nothing fresh that I can tell;
  3. Is it from some other known source in the area?
  4. What is that part that the pool of oil landed on?
2009 MC, Justa, CR/B, Automatic, about 93,000 kms.

the oil is landing on the automatic transmission bell housing.

Clean the area and see if it returns. this could be from the time you before you fixed it.

also, make sure your oil is at the right level all the time despite the leak.

Thanks. Have cleaned the area and will monitor. Another user thought it may be the valve cover leaking but is that even physically possible to get oil from the VC to this spot?

Well it’s back. Don’t even need to take pictures. After cleaning the exact pool of oil it is back after about a week. No apparent leaks around vacuum pump and I just can’t find any other source in the area that looks to be leaking. Anyone have any suggestions where to look next? It’s like floating oil is landing and pooling in this spot.

I had a similar leak about a couple of years ago and it was coming from the vacuum pump and oil sending unit. My pump was leaking not between the engine block and pump but from the pump and the cover. It was quickly discovered by using a mirror and looking under the pump. While I was replacing the pump I then noticed the sending unit was leaking where the wiring harness connected to it.

Thanks so much for the reply. Which part is the sending unit that you mention?

Sorry, forgot to ask the obvious question ... did replacing the pump solve the problem? Or did you have to do or replace something else?

Replacing the pump and sending unit solved my oil leaks. The senor or sending unit is located right next to the pump. if looking from the drivers side, it would be to the right of the pump. Hope this helps....

Thanks again, I'll figure it out when I have the hood opened. Just ordered a new pump from ECS Tuning - really reasonable $112 for the unit ... hope it solves the problem ...

i think you nailed it! Was able to check while still warm and could feel a clean area of oil coming out of the vacuum pump on the hidden side of the pump. Waiting for new vacuum pump now.

Shiny new pump from ECS.
Anyone have a need for an old one?
Installed the new vacuum pump yesterday. Will see if the leak stops now.

I do do like the shiny new finish.
