Hi. I have a 2006 MC with 24k miles. The fuel pump failed two days ago, and I was looking for a replacement. The oem pump is very expensive ($345), so I was looking for a cheap one.
I found that the fuel pump for vehicles from 2002 to 2004 (mfg part #16146766177) cost almost half of 2004 to 2006 pump (mfg part #16146765119). Both pumps look very similar, so I just want to know if they are interchangeable. Thanks for advice.
Wow. 24k miles is one of the lowest I have seen. Can you share more details of the car?
Mine is 46k. I can assure you that when there are different parts for two different year range, they are not interchangeable. You need to do a bit more research to find a cheaper price OEM equivalent pump. It should not be that hard.
It is one thing buying a low end part that is basically metal but another buying a low end electrical unit especially something that has a motor and bearings. IMO the pumps that the vendors have here, see the link in my signature below, have proven over time that they hold up.
I agree with Whine not Walnuts regarding such a crucial and complex part, better not to skimp or you end up paying more in the long run when the substandard part fails and you have to buy another.
I also agree with pnwR53S that it isn't really too difficult to find the OEM equivalent part --- and you've done the right thing by focusing on part numbers, with the # you listed I found the VDO version and it lists at $209.95:
It looks like the same part to my eyes, but I cannot verify.
You'd have to call them or perhaps ECS Tuning will see this and chime in because he's very very helpful in these matters.
^^ +1 the VDO is the factory manufacturer for the Genuine MINI one above. I would just get the year/ part that fits. Otherwise, if you mod it and the next person ever tries to fix it down the road it will confuse them as the part numbers are different. Also, i can see the older ones are 3 pin and the newer ones are 5 pins plugs.

Just my two cents . . . . .

Ok. Thanks for your comments. I have been buying from ecstuning since two years ago, and they are a great shop. No doubt at all.
I am just confused, because some sellers out there are selling these fuel pump with these mfg part #s as interchangeable:
16 14 6 765 119
16 14 6 766 176
1614 6 759 955
At the pictures, they really look to be the same part. Only the plastic on the top are different color ( White / green).

and with ECS chimed in there is little to go wrong with VDO.

I followed your link to ECS but it says no-fit with my 05 MCS.
Now if a 6 turned out to be 9

Wait just a minute, hmmmm I had a nagging suspicion about this. The brass hammer and the special toilet had me thinking but those gloves and the coffee roaster was what made me connect the dots.
I am thinking that this pnwR53S guy is really that old hippie that runs around barefooted out in Washington State. We got you Mister Mick Dodge . . . . .
Just for the science, I think i will buy the cheap one just to compare it with the oem pump. I will be here soon with that comparison.
Then....I will buy the right one VDO pump.
I will be back soon with the cheap vs oem pump comparison.....
Hi. Im back again....
This is what I did....Just for the science
My first idea was to buy, just for testing purpose, a cheap 56 bucks pump from ebay. But, after some google search, I found information that make me think about other cheaper solution....I am talking about 20 bucks shipped pump.....yeah....you heard right....20.
Thats made me think that there was some similarity between the mini r50 pump, and VW jetta/beetle pump. The pictures I found at the web confirm that similarity, so I ordered one pump from ebay:

(Old pump at the left, new at the right.)
It have a good fit with the pump case:

So i put all things back to the car, and the results were as expected....the car is alive again.
I know this is just a quick and very cheap solution for somebody that need a quick fix....
Based on that information, the fuel pump of some german cars are similar, so i decided to buy an aftermarket vw fuel pump from ebay (20 bucks shipped)....
As I said before........this is "just for the science"
