Hi Guys, new to this site but have a question, I have an 08 cooper s which was misfiring and running rough, its got 104,000 Km on it and Ive had it from new, decided to strip down the intake manifold to check the valve condition, looked horrible so set to work with a pick, screwdriver, degreaser, carbon cleaner and air hose, came up pretty good with the help of a mini camera, put everthing back together, thought id change out the oil and oil filter at the same time and decided to try the seafoam treatment just to flush out any bits I might have missed. Mini fired up straight away and After the usual seafoam smoke took her for a drive to see how she ran, engine ran great not missing a beat sounds good apart from the turbo wasn't working which is unusual cos it was fine before the strip down. After a visit to several online forums everthing points to a leak, engine light came on when I went for a test drive showing half a engine symbol, so decided to strip her again check everthing and put it back slowly double checking as I went. after completion went for a drive just the same, the only thing I didn't change was the manifold gaskets, which looked good, would have changed them but my local shop had to order them which was gunna take a week, I'm way to impatient, Perth West Australia, like living on the Moon sometimes, but anyway... question.... could this be my leak?
Also found a split in the bottom of the pipe which connects to the turbo, didn't see it at first, but it is split although it has the rubber sleeve which might seal any leaks, question 2... would this be enough to turn off the turbo???

Were you able to use a code reader to pull up the BMW specific codes. I doubt its the seal as those are designed to be reusable. I would double check all of your electrical connections, both MAP sensors, fuel purge, etc... A leak in the intake pipe after the MAF will trigger a code but knowing the code will help narrow things down a bit.

 

Not too sure how to pull up the BMW error codes, I will double check the electrical connectors again, theres only two that I can think of when stripping the intake manifold, is that right? Is it possible to bring up the codes by using the incar computer?

 

If you are wrenching on a MINI you must have a code reader that reads MINI/BMW codes. There is no way around it. Just Google BMW MINI Cooper Scan tool, and you'll find a bunch of them at various prices.

 

One of the "gadgets" under the intake manifold is the waste gate controller. If one of its hoses is loose / damaged or connected to the wrong fitting, or the connector isn't seated, your turbo wastegate will be open, preventing boost. RealOEM or NewTIS should have a connection diagram for wastegate hoses.

 

Thanks guys, all good pipe was off the vacuum unit, robber hose was shot so popped off with little effort, its sometimes the obvious that eludes us aye!!!
