Bad Starter?

2009 Mini Cooper Justa.

Been having some trouble lately, every now and then the car would not start. Sometimes if I just left it alone for a while it would start again.

Now it is completely off. I got the battery tested at a local AutoZone, and the battery is fine, holds a charge well and is fully charged.

When I put the fob into the ignition, pushing the Start button does nothing, (yes I am pressing down on the clutch).

Could this be a bad starter? If so, is this something I might be able to replace on my own, I've done some more basic things on this car like replacing the water pump, pulley, belt, and brakes.

Any way I can test and confirm that it is the starter and not something else.

One more thing I noticed, the radio works, locks work, but windows do not work. Additionally, when you put the key fob in and press the start button it does not do anything. (Not starting the car, just the ON position).

It could be a bad clutch switch.

Do you think it's worth swapping out the clutch switch first to see if that is the problem?

Just bypass the clutch switch with a jumper wire, if that fixes the problem, get a new clutch switch.

Any other ideas on what could be causing these issues, I'm pretty sure the Clutch switch shouldn't affect the windows.

Does the car have a sunroof? If so, check the floor boards for water. You may be in for a footwell module, JBE, and possible wiring repair if that's the case.

Starters aren't a common failure on these cars.

There is no sunroof in the car, and I haven't spilled water or any other liquids. Do you know what/how I can test for this?

When you say inserting the fob does nothing, do you mean it won't engage the start sequence, or do no lights or anything come on? What I'm asking is, does it act like you haven't even put the key in?

That is correct, no start sequence, no dash lights, nothing. But if I press the radio button the radio turns on.

My issue gave me full lights and car turned "on" but no start sequence, so my experience is going to be limited in diagnosing this. Does the key slot seem to be acting normally? Like locking the key in place? I've heard of key tray failures and start/stop module failures. With the problem kinda coming and going for a while I'd suspect a mechanical failure with one of those systems.

You won't believe this. Everything was fine, it was the key fob that was the problem. No idea what was wrong with it, I tried with my replacement key and all good. I never suspected the key fob because it was still unlocking the doors and trunk with no problem.
