Any evidence oem roof racks cause rust?

I have an opportunity to buy an oem roof rack for $100. I'd like this because oem, I can still use my sunroof, can sell current Thule rack and end up in the positive... gf is worried about rust if we have to drill the roof though. My only counterpoint to that is it's oem and as long as you install and seal properly it won't be a problem. Is there any evidence that installing the oem rack can cause rust or that we shouldn't worry about it? Not sure where to start looking as all my googling has just pulled up aftermarket racks and rust issues. Thanks!

If installed properly, it shouldn't leak which causes rust. But even the OEM can leak over time if not installed properly. I have a roof rack on mine and have the same concern as your girlfriend. I have to wait and see. If I could have, I prefer not having any rack. If you go through with it, make sure you know what your doing before starting. I know only one person who put one on after getting the car (Firebird), and yes, in 4 years he had rust.

I got a dealer installed rack on my '03 S in the fall of 2002 and I've had no rust issues at all, zero, so I'd say that if it's installed properly you shouldn't worry. The installation directions are a little scary, and you need the proper template and tools to DIY- glad I didn't. I actually haven't used the rack more than a handful of times, but it worked fine when I did.

Simply use Gen 2 roof rack on first gen. It fits perfectly, without drilling the roof.

I have never seen the old ones rust on the roof.
