Stock Problems/IssuesDiscussions related to warranty related issues and repairs, or other problems with the OEM parts and software for MINI Clubman (R55), Cooper and Cooper S(R56), and Cabrio (R57).
Looking for feedback from people who have done PCV mods such as blockoffs, routing to catch cans, or routing to atmosphere. I just did the carbon cleaning on my 2009 Cooper S. I'm particularly interested in hearing your experiences after 30,000 miles or so. Does it really prevent buildup, and has it caused any other problems such as turbo failure or increase oil consumption?
I ask because some are claiming that the carbon is coming directly from the combustion process during the "overlap" period when the exhaust valves are closing and the intake valves are starting to open. Also, there is a small amount of oil that may seep down the valve guide and cause the valve stem to be sticky enough for these deposits to stick.
I'm tempted to plug one hose, then vent the other one to atmosphere using a high speed check valve such as this:
...to let air pulses out, but not in to hopefully pull a slight negative in the crankcase to help the turbo bearing oil drain back to the crankcase. Thoughts? Experiences?
Please don't vent to atmosphere, that's serious pollution.
Mini has an updated valve cover for the N14 that improves the PCV system and should significantly reduce carbon build up. Check out realoem.com or the NAM vendors.
