Whirring/buzzing sound from rear at 45 mph onwards

Hi all,

Did a search in the whole forum as well as in this one but could not find anything on it.

I am posting my question here because, perhaps the sound may be normal and unique to convertibles. It starts at about 45mph and sounds like a millions bees buzzing from the rear. It gets louder up to 60 mph but does not thereafter. I thought it was the tyre noise from the P Zero RFs and so I replaced all four tyres today with quiet non-RFs. The noise is still there albeit slightly softer.

It does not sound like a worn wheel bearing which I am familiar with. Any ideas anyone? Many thanks.

I had a buzzing sound from a small checkered flag on my antenna when I got up to speed, but probably not your issue since I think your antenna is above your windscreen.

Go around the black fender and rear bumper trim and make sure they are tight. Look for anything on the undercarraige that could be flapping in the wind like a soda straw even, it's possible you could have picked up something from the road.

Yea, my guess is a wheel arch trim might have come loose.

Going to move you to the Stock Problems/Issues area.

Have you jacked the car up and tugged on the wheel to verify it is not the bearing? Also after driving is the rim warmer than usual? Perhaps a caliper is not releasing.

Many thanks for all your replies. I have checked them all but they seem fine. So i had my daughter sit in the rear and she told me that the sound is coming from the left rear only. I am beginning to think it's the wheel bearing even though it doesn't sound like the classic sound. I will have the wheel hub changed and update you all. Many thanks.

I was just about to suggest that. My mother in laws had a similar buzz we couldn't track down. When she went to get her tires rotated they told her she had a bad wheel bearing - they fixed it and the buzzing went away. Totally didn't sound like a bearing, sounded like a air buzzing.

Before changing the hub, just jack up the LR of the car and jiggle the wheel around. If you can jiggle it on the mounting plane, the bearing is shot.

It was indeed the left wheel hub. After I removed it, it was rough when I spun it - not enough wear to cause a play but it was "grindy". An easy job and which took me about an hour. Many thanks to all you guys for your help.

Yes, it will growl and you can feel it when you spin it. Do both of them, otherwise, you do one then the other.
