Good luck, I still had to go in with my scan tool to clear the code, but it would not let me before the fuse was changed. It was showing the code as “present” as in active..... but when I scanned it after the fuse, it said “not present “ and I knew I was good, the code cleared after that.
Hmmm...looking at the photo I took yesterday, my MINI/BMW specific scanner (Foxwell) was showing "37DE/not present". That was taken after I pushed in the PCV heater's connector all the way in (it was out). Maybe all I need to do is to clear the code.
By the way, I learnt something new today... what "not present" means. I also have a bunch of other VANOS related errors which are "not present".
The only one which is shown as present is - "3490/present : Map thermostat, activation: line disconnection"

We learn new things all the time here. Lol.
Yeah, any of those codes that show not present, just clear them. The one present one, that’s your active code there.
I cleared the codes and for now, the PCV error seems to have gone.:-) THANKS for all the help
Lets see if it comes back again. I drove it around the neighborhood, it did not come back
The other errors... Map thermostat and VANOS errors came back. Gotta start a thread about those....but I see some relevant threads already,
Lol got the same problem again after taking my valve cover off. It is that little plug I circled in the original picture, make sure you push it all the way in
Okay, I drove about 100 miles now. The heater circuit code (P053A) is still popping up without the engine light being on. Even after I cleared it. What gives?
The new code P0420, I think it may have to do with the downstream 02 Sensor. The o2 sensor is coming in next week.
if you look at the sensor closely, there is a red marking on it. If its visible, you need to push the sensor more. Once it clicks, its done. You may go back to scanner and clear the code. it happens to me after i changed my valve cover. turns out it is because the switch plug isnt plugged all the way.
Now I am trying to get rid of the P0420. The only thing I can think of that's causing the code is this small leak on my Muffler that I patched with JB Weld. I currently have a Magna Flow Exhuast.
So, I think I am going to do a muff delete. Hopefully, the code will disappear.
New to this forum. Just got my Mini, A 2012 R56 S!
So I replaced the thermostat housing because of a leak but now I can't get rid of the ETC P053A: Positive Crankcase Ventilation Heater Circuit Open.
I've tried ensuring sure the plugs are in place, zip tied them, applied a bit of RTV to the hose connections... No luck. I've attached some pictures, I just want to see if anyone has any advice before I go ahead and spend $150 on the new hose. Also can someone verify that I'm looking at the correct hose & connection?
P.S. what is the function of a PCV 'heater?'
Thanks,
Bob
hey I seen you got the same problem I am just getting this? I'm not to sure how to fix this

I'm curious if you were able to fix the problem, I'm having the same issue, I changed my thermostat and now I'm getting a PVC ventilation heater circuit open? Did you end up having to change out the s shaped hose??
I keep getting this code and not sure which one it is i already changed the s pipe with the two sensors hasnt cleared and has my mini on limp mode
Which relay could it be? Havent tried the relay but which one is it?
PCV code as well and engine malfunction reduced power
I changed my thermostat as well and now I’m getting engine malfunction reduced power code and can’t figure out why. The dealer broke my PCV pigtail off but I got it connected with the pins but no housing until I can get one.

I just replaced my thermostat plastic junk with an after market aluminum housing one. Got the same code. Verified the cables were correctly seated and in place. Used the OBDII reader and cleared the code. Hasn’t been back since. Good luck.
This is almost always that the connector isn't seated properly. Easy to miss because they're only loosely clamped to the PCV fittings and can slide forward/back while still looking correct.
