Rear wiper has a ADHD problem!

Today I got in my mini and started it, headed home. The rear wiper started to wipe non-stop! Then it stopped at a random spot on the window. The wiper stalk did nothing!

In a few minutes it did it again on its own. Stopped in a different spot.

The switch is locked out for a bit then 5 min later I can just twist it a bit from off, and it will do the same thing, lots of wipes, then random stop...

Switch, motor, control module?

Anyone seen this?

it sounds like a " short" in a wire. The rear wiper motors get water in them from a poor design.
When...and IF the rain stops here ( in NE as well) take out the motor and inspect
We just put a new rear wiper motor in.
Price was not that bad. About $100...aftermarket
pretty easy to replace...little time consuming..about an hour

How many miles on your Mini ?

Good Luck

Bet there is a little rust back there.

Some people think the "rust belt" is the NE where the factories are rusting away while other recognize that the "rust belt" is the area where they put salt on the road during the winter and your car disintegrates in front of your eyes. The belt is what you use to hold the outside of the car together after it has rusted away.

I just turned over 80k. The rear washer is clogged too, I think the easiest try will be replacing the wiper motor to solve both issues!!

Check that wire and if the motor itself is bad and shorted then its a new motor and the conversion. Just like above water can get in there as well as salt and rust things out.

Better than the OEM one at 180+, however the first one came in with a clogged nozzle, Rock Auto was super fast with a replacement.

I had to use a sawzall to remove the arm from the shaft, then use my vice and sockets as a press to pop out the old piece of the shaft.

After that, easy peasey reinstall. 6 screws on the hatch panel, harness connector, hose for washer fluid, 3 10mm bolts and done.

Yeah, welcome to VT, even plastic rusts!

But seriously, I did, and I have an amazing r53, not a lick of rust anywhere, I put it on a lift and check it all the time!

😁

I spray the underbody once to twice a year and those brake lines and snap in connections also. Salt belt kills things.
