I get a "bulb" indication that there is a "light" issue, and it is, its the left rear light (im attaching a pic). Is there a way i can replace it on my own, and how easy is it to do so?

 

I wonder, isn't there a "how to guide" for replacing the rear lights?

 

Very easy to do, that same bulb went out on my 08 MCS and I replaced it in about 5 minutes after getting a replacement bulb. In your owner's manual there should be a section on all the different light bulbs used in the car, I found it on page 117 in this PDF:

You need to buy a replacement W5W bulb. Then open the hatch and take off that felt panel on the left side of the trunk. The light housing is accessible from there and it should be easy to figure out how to take out the old bulb and replace it. That one should be the topmost bulb in the column of 3 (or 4) .

 

pop off the chrome trim and then there is 3 T20 torx screws holding the light in. Pull the light out then you can take the bulb out the back and replace it.

Why remove the entire light, when bulbs can be replaced through the access panel using no tools?

 

Yes you are right, but when you do this for the first time you dont know whats going on in there behind the light and its easier to dismantle the whole thing. Anyway, yes you are right it can be done without any tools etc.

 

I find it easier to just take the light out. Also we can check the contacts on the bulb sockets easily that way. But your right it can be done without pulling it, but gotta get your hand in the right place.

 

The contacts on the bulb sockets? For what reason check the contacts for, can there be an issue there too?

 

Way Motorworks does a very good job at checking "everything" when they do a repair.

They are checking them for corrosion. Corrosion can cause the lights to do many weird things.

I also check them every time I change a bulb just to be sure.

 

How can i protect them from corrosion?

 

A bit of dielectric grease placed on the contacts should help to eliminate any further corrosion, once any possible previous corrosion is removed.

 

Is corrosion responsible for destroying the metallic wiring?

 

Don't touch the bulb with a bare hand. The oil on your hand/fingers may shorten the bulb life.
