Strange issue with 05 Automatic

Hi guys I have a small problem with our mini which I cant seem to figure out nor find other posts with the same problem. We have a 2005 with an Automatic transmission, the transmission shifts fine (knock on wood) but yesterday I was driving it and all of a sudden it switched from D to the M/S mode. I felt the RPMs go up a little bit and pulled over. I noticed I was no longer on D but it was showing M/S, the lever had not moved over to the right to engage that mode so I was confused. I moved the lever to P and noticed the other positions N and R would not light up. I moved the lever back down to D and it was flickering between D and M/S. I nudged the lever over to the left lightly and D stayed lit up. The car drove normally, shifted perfectly and had no more issues. Yesterday the car did it again, I returned home and I popped up the lever selector base to just reveal the wires. Everything looked normal. I put everything together and turned on the car again. The selector seemed to be fine, all spots lit up fine from P to D. I moved it up and down a few times to see if it would flicker and engage M/S mode again.

Drove it again today and it did it again a couple of times. All I have to do is nudge it over to the left a little bit and it goes back to normal.

Has anybody here experienced this kind of failure? any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Chris

Did you ever get an answer? i have an 06 MCS and a 2015 VW GTI and my GTI manual tells me not to rest my hand on the shift lever while I drive to avoid wearing out the switch and causing just such a problem. Do you have a habit of resting your had on the shift?
