Gearing

Ok, so I started thinking after reading the performance thread about intakes/alta/ etc...

What are the top-speeds with regard to a Cooper S and its gearing?

I understand how it works and don't really need an explanation, but I'd like to know what the limits are. My car is currently in PA while I drive the X5 so I can't go out and test but if I remember right my 04 S will do above 70 in 2nd gear, probably only 70 taking into account speedometer inaccuracies, etc.. but I remember having an indicated 72mph. Is this possible, or is my speedo completely fubar?

6-Speed Manual Transmission

Below are maximum speeds in gear calculated for 17" wheels---ADD about 0.6MPH [1.0KPH] for 16" wheels.

Gear RPM MPH
1.....................6750...............42.6
2.....................6750...............67.9
3.....................6750...............90.3
4.....................6750..............110.5
5.....................6750..............133.1
6....................(5500).............(135)

((RPM/Gear Ratio) * Wheel Circumference In Feet)*(Minutes Per Hour / Feet Per Mile)

well, the MINI's redline is 6950 as of late MY02 I believe, so here's the updated speed/gear with stock redline and then a ECU'd MINI w/7200rpm redline, with 205/45-17's:

1st gear - 6950rpm = 43.9mph, 7200rpm = 45.5mph
2nd gear - 6950rpm = 69.8mph, 7200rpm = 72.4
3rd gear - 6950rpm = 92.9mph, 7200rpm = 96.3
4th gear - 6950rpm = 113.8mph, 7200rpm = 117.9
5th gear - 6950rpm = 137.2mph, 7200rpm = 142.1
6th gear - 6950rpm = 168.0mph, 7200rpm = 174.0
Reverse - 6950rpm = 45.1mph, 7200rpm = 46.7mph

Hmm, that means my speedo is reading around 4mph faster than actual speed, thats not so good.

Unless of course that my MINI has different gearing than everyone else's.

In 2004, they did change the gearing a bit correct? I was under the impression that the gearing was raised a smidge, which would make the theoretical top speeds per gear lower yah?

Gearing rations for both MC and MCS were not changed at all for the 2004 model year.

I'll send a PM to MINIAC as he originally posted this::

It won't ... the transmission gear ratios have changed effective with July 2004 builds. Cooper S models built prior to July 2004 will attain a higher speed in 2nd gear [gears 1 - 5 actually] than those built from that month forward. None will "theoretically" attain 70 mph at 6750 rpm in 2nd however

I believe that July 2004 builds are actually considered to be MY 2005 cars.

I posted the above in a thread on intakes in hopes of settling an argument on how fast a Cooper S could go in second gear.

I also posted the following formula for calculating "speed in gear", which is the same as Trippy quoted above:

R * 60 * 3.14159 * (W * P / 100 * 2 / 25.4 + D) / 12 / 5280 / G

R = RPM of engine

W = Width of tire
P = Profile (aspect ratio) of tire
D = Diameter of wheel
G = Gear Ratio

The transmission gear ratios have indeed changed for July 2004 builds which are considered MY 2005 MINIs. The gear ratio changes provide better acceleration and roughly 5 mph less speed in gears 1 - 5.

More info on gear ratios and speed in gears is available at MINI2:

I don't think BMW speedos are well known for their accuracy

Hope this helps :smile:
