2005 r53 heat/flap arm/lever on passenger footwell sticks

2005 r53 heat/flap arm/lever on passenger footwell sticks
so the little flapper arm/linkage on the passenger footwell is "sticking" and if I "help" it a little bit it starts to work and I have heat

anyone have any ideas? It works with the engine off so I'm assuming it's a solenoid and turning something that's gummed up, maybe the coolant control valve?

It's the arm that is external and you can "help" it's working fine now that I helped it a few times
