clutch and flywheel are toast...how many miles can i go?
so i am in a bit of a dilemma.
my clutch and flywheel are pretty much toast. the car smells burnt after driving, and while driving i hit the gas, the RPM goes up but doesnt accelerate right away.
i found a car to trade it in for (yes, they know flywheel is dead), as my car isnt worth enough to justify dropping 2500 on it! but my bigger question is how far can I take this thing safely? the car i want is a good bit away.
I would not drive it that far you dont know how bad it is till the clutch is fully gone.
What model do you have Cooper S. If you diy it you can do it for less ? Go with a Clutch Master Dual mass to single mass~ 1100 for it, dual mass stock is expensive. or quote a indy shop to do it, of course it would be more. Dual mass flywheel stock and clutch kit stock would be around the same cost.
I wouldn't drive it much if you know the clutch is bad. As an option, we have some kit options HERE and some info on if you wanted to do the flywheel conversion. If you have the tools and are DIY savvy we have a article that can help you do the job, which will save you a lot. Otherwise, you could take it to an indy shop and have them do the install, which would cost you way less than $2500. If you have any questions let me know and good luck.
Clutches are impossible to predict. You might be able to baby it for a while, or the next time you're at a red light, it doesn't move when the light goes green. You didn't post year, model & miles on the mini. If you like the car might be worth saving. Was the $2500 quote from an independent?
