Burning Rubber Smell under high revs

This is an 02 MCS no mods accept a BMP CAI.

I have noticed on occasion when I am accelerating fast from first through fourth gear shifting 4500-5500 that I get a definite whiff of burning rubber. Is this normal or is my SC belt slipping or somthing?

I DO NOT HAVE A REDUCTION PULLEY!

Thoughts anyone...

Sure you're not smoking your clutch?

I don't think so. But I couldn't say for sure. I am unfamiliar with the smell of a smoked clutch. This is a definite burnt rubber odor.

When you smoke your clutch it smells like a spent cap gun (at least my BMW does). Remember those when you were a little kid?

yeah...I love that smell...but not if it is my clutch. I will have to try and pay close attention to the smell next time it comes around and see if is smells more like burnt rubber or like gun powder.

Sounds like a burnt clutch to me. What are you dumping the clutch at? How are you feathering it out?

Let me clarify. I am not talking about a first gear clutch dump. Most of these instances I am probably doing a rolling start in either first or second. For example I am doing a right on red onto an uphill road. I am usually climbing this hill pretty quick shifting high but doing quick clean shifts. I don't thing this is a problem with me shifting poorly.

Hope this helps clarify my question.

If it's driveline related - then it's definitely a faulty part from factory - a reduction pulley will barely bring your car back to sea-level power - and your CAI is good for about 1HP, so I consider your car less-than Stock for all intensive purposes.

Please let us know if you can more accurately identify the type of smell. Does it only occur from 4500-5500, and not below OR above?

Ok. I've burtn't my clutch once and can tell you a MINI clutch smells like a table saw with a dull blade that's burning the wood. I also get the smell at high revs and tend to think it's the cat being overloaded. The reason for this hypothesis is that I can smell the same thing when an SUV cuts me off and floors it. The smell only hits above ~4500 rpm (if I'm ever above that, it's floored). Remember that the MINI runs very rich at high rpm's so I can see how a cat can easily get overwhelmed.

I could buy the cat theory. Burnt rubber is about as pinned down as I can describe it. Definitely at high rpms under HARD acceleration (but not red line or rev limited). After my burst of acceleration at high revs a usually smell it in the few seconds following and the smell then disipates rather quickly (within several seconds).

The reason I ask about the SC belt is my car is an 02 with 23,000 on it and I am wondering if it is possible for my SC belt to slip under hard acceleration conditions.

Should I be worried about a CRITICAL Drivetrain part failing in the middle of a spirited mountain run?

Could it be your tyres? I find myself hearing chirps regularly when I accelerate hard.

Pretty sure it is not the tires.

Could it be the Pulley Belt slipping?
