Strange Check Engine Light Problem

I have a 2005 JCW with several modifications. The Check Engine light came on indicating a lean fuel mixture. I drove it for a few months before I had time to fix it. I found a crack in the hose between the throttle body and the intake. That has now been fixed.

The strange (and frustrating) issue is the Check Engine Light will still not clear. My local mechanic has checked everything we can think of and there are no mechanical problems with he car. He can clear the code but then it immediately comes back when the key in turned on. It will even (not always) throw the code before the engine is running. He thinks I should go to a dealer and have the ECU re-flashed. I'm not so sure. It sounds like a faulty sensor or electrical issue to me.

Any thoughts?

What's the code...
If it throws a code without the engine running...kinda indicates a bad sensor....
If the sensor is "out of limits" with the car off...it will throw a code...when my t-map failed, it would throw a code with the motor off....
Does the ecu show a "pending code" before the light turns on?

The code is P2090. There are no pending codes.

This code is new after the repair and there is nothing wrong with the camshaft.

So, after a week at my Mini dealer they called me and asked if they could return the car to stock and then begin to diagnose the problem. What?!? They said with all the aftermarket parts they cannot diagnose the issue.

Here's te problem: The only aftermarket part related to the engine that is not a Mini JCW part is the cold air filter. Everything else is suspension related.

Needless to say, my answer was "NO WAY!!"

Choice #1, find a good Indy shop!

Choice #2, give in to the fact that Mini has a set procedure for diagnosing troubles. I'm assuming that some of your parts are not factory, so they want to go back to square one. If you put a decal on the windshield they probably will want to scrape it off. Find a good Indy mechanic.

What is wrong with installing the original air filter? If that helps them T-shoot the problem, why not? What is a cold air filter anyway? Doesn't the original air filter get its air ahead of the radiator anyway? That is what a cold air intake is supposed to do.

BTW, we did a study on air filters and found that the standard square Fram air filter from Wal-mart had the same pressure drop as the expensive tubular reusable ones. The tubular ones often get their air behind the radiator so getting cold air becomes harder.

Just a thought.

A p2090 is a mini specific code. It's based on a stored code that you can't clear with a normal obd2 scanner. You need to either have he dealer clear your adaptations. Or get yourself the BMW INPA software and cable.

You'll need to clear all adaptations and then clear one memory. Then it'll be gone.

If you're in the New England area, I can clear this stuff for you. I'm in Rhode Island.
Don't waste your time stripping parts from the car. Mini is just trying to get money from you.
